Shots from the hip: Bravo to all volunteers

Bravo to all the volunteers who make events like Prescott Daze possible. All communities rely on a core of individuals who willingly donate their time and energy in ways to benefit their community. It’s true in Prescott and in all communities. The same people over and over again can be seen volunteering to work on ball fields, organize games for youths, plan and host local events, serve on committees, pick up trash, water flowers, and construct walking trails, all for the good of their communities. Thank goodness to all those who are willing to say “yes” when asked to help and for giving the best gift you can give anyone - your own time.

The Minnesota State Cross Country Team finished third in the 15-team “Running of the Cows” meet hosted by Carleton College in Northfield, Minn. on Saturday.  A sophomore, Madison Matzek finished 17th in a field of 214 runners. The 2022 Prescott alumna crossed the finish line with a time of 23.23.  Brava Madison.

The Cardinals travel to Amery this Friday to take on the Warriors. Amery features running back Koy Hopke who is a three-time WIAA State Wrestling champion who will be wrestling at the University of Minnesota next year.

The Bloomer Blackhawk volleyball team enters the week at the #5 ranked team in Division 2 in the latest Wisconsin Volleyball Coaches Association rankings. Rice Lake, with a record of 14-2, is listed as Honorable Mention. Up Highway 35, the St. Croix Falls Saints are now the #1 ranked team in Division 3.

UW-Badger golfer Ava Salay competed in her first ever NCAA Division I match as the University of Wisconsin hosted the Badger Invitational at University Ridge Golf Course on Sunday, Sept. 17 to Tuesday, Sept. 19. Competing teams included Augusta, Colorado State, Delaware, East Tennessee, Indiana, Iowa, New Mexico State, North Florida, Rutgers, Sam Houston, South Florida UC Davis, UTSA and Yale. After Sunday’s first round the Badgers were tied for first with Delaware with a team score of two over par.

River Falls linebacker Jake Olson recorded one sack and four tackles as UW-River Falls pounded Northwestern-St. Paul by a score of 75-3. The #7 ranked Falcons will host the UW-Platteville Pioneers on Sept. 30 in the conference opener for both teams.

Tickets can now be purchased via the Prescott School District website for the Hall of Fame Induction Banquet at Prescott High School Sept. 30. Jaci Kosin, Steve Block, and Ryan Berg will become the fifth class inducted into the Prescott Hall of Fame. Doors open at 6 p.m., meal served at 6:45 p.m., with induction program beginning at approximately 7:30 p.m. Cost of the banquet is $25 with a limited number of tickets being sold at the door.

Hmmm … Perhaps it was the voodoo curse placed upon Aaron Rodgers a couple weeks ago at an area restaurant that ended the season for the sure Hall of Famer…

Will the WIAA make the switch back to four quarters in basketball? The story continues to unfold.

Last month junior guard Isabella Lenz and the Michigan Tech Huskies spent 10 days in Italy and Greece and played six exhibition games in the southern European countries. The Huskies finished 3-3 as they prepare for the fast-approaching season. Last year the Huskies finished with an overall record of 25-7 and advanced to the NCAA Division 2 Tournament. A 2021 Prescott alumnus, Lenz was a 1st Team All Conference selection last year and led the Huskies in scoring. With a strong core of returnees, the Huskies are expected to challenge for the conference championship again this year.

Headshaker of the week. The final baseball games of the 2023 season at Firehall Field this past weekend included teams from Minnesota, Iowa, and North Dakota. Along with the play on the field, there was another performance that left many in attendance with mouths agape. A few minutes before game one on Sunday, a litany of obscenities emanated from one of the dugouts. The profanity-laced commentary included expletives that would have impressed any frontiersman or sailor on the high seas. Meanwhile, the backwards hat wearing coach who was within earshot of the foul-mouthed teenager said nothing. Perhaps a bar of soap should be included in the dirty mouthed adolescent’s bat bag. It was a headshaker.
