Shots from the hip: Breckin Schommer wins Prescott Invitational

Prescott senior Breckin Schommer grabbed top honors in the Prescott Cross Country Invitational last Saturday. The gifted senior harrier turned in a time of 17.41 to finish atop the podium at the seven-team meet. Sophomore Nolan Leask also medaled turning in a sixth-place finish as the Cardinals ended the morning in second place to team champion St. Croix Central. The Prescott girls team finished in fourth place with senior Abby Overland being the first to break the tape for the Cardinals. Hats off to Head Coach Tim Phillips and all the volunteers for hosting the meet. Prescott will be hosting the Middle Border Conference meet on Thursday, Oct. 12.

Some Prescott football fans may have argued that Jordan Hansen’s charges might experience a let down in their game against the Durand Panthers last Friday. After all, Prescott was coming off a convincing 26-0 victory over Eau Claire Regis and was named the team of the week by the Wisconsin Sports Network. A let down? Hardly. Last Friday the Cardinals piled up over 500 yards of offense in a 41-12 convincing win over the Durand Panthers. Quarterback Teddy Bernick turned in another sterling performance finishing 17-21 for 316 yards and three touchdowns. The talented junior signal caller also paced the Cardinals on the ground running with 96 yards on 15 carries and two touchdowns. Sophomore wideout Kobe Russell caught six passes for 170 yards and two touchdowns and senior Nolan Thomley hauled in a 79-yard touchdown pass from Bernick.

Prescott opens conference play this Friday as they travel to Osceola in a crucial Middle Border clash. In last year’s meeting with Osceola, Barrett Temmers ran for 169 yards and Teddy Bernick threw for 357 yards and two touchdowns as the Cardinals won by a score of 43-22.

In other non-conference action in the Middle Border, Ellsworth pummeled Waukesha South 48-6, Baldwin-Woodville dominated Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau 43-7, Amery bested Unity 40-21, Rice Lake eased by Superior 34-10, and St. Croix Central clobbered Elk Mound 42-0. Somerset fell to Northwestern by a score of 30-20 and Mondovi squeaked by Osceola 32-29.

This past weekend Head Coach Tracey Budworth and the Prescott girls volleyball team finished fifth in the 21-team UW-Whitewater High School Invitational Tournament. The Cardinals finished with a match record of 5-3 and defeated teams from Whitewater, Platteville, Shoreland Lutheran, and McFarland. University of Kansas recruit Reese Ptacek was named to the All Tournament team.

Tickets can now be purchased via the Prescott School District website for the Hall of Fame Induction Banquet at Prescott High School. Hall of Fame Committee members remind and encourage everyone to nominate those deserving of Hall of Fame consideration for induction in 2025. Nomination forms are available via the school district website.

The Ellsworth Panthers and Baldwin-Woodville are ranked #3 and #4 respectively in the most recent Wisconsin Football Division 4 rankings. The River Falls Wildcats also find themselves in the top 10 at #6 in Division 2.

Speaking of rankings, the #1 ranked Prescott Cardinal girls golf team will be heading to the Ellsworth Country Club for a match against other Middle Border Conference Schools this Thursday. Other area teams ranked in the Top 10 in Division 2 included Hayward at #7, St. Croix Central at #9, and Spooner at #10.

Did you know…NFL and NCAA goalposts are 18 feet, 6 inches wide. High school goalposts are 23 feet, 4 inches wide. The first baseball team to begin wearing batting helmets was the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1941. Wearing helmets did not become mandatory until 1971. Football goal posts were originally kept on the goal lines, but after they began to interfere with play, they were moved back to the end lines in 1927, where they have remained in college football ever since. The National Football League moved the goalposts up to the goal line again in 1933, then back again to the end line in 1974.

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources announced that Slinger High School sophomore Samantha Williams is the winner of the 2024 Wisconsin State Park and Forest vehicle admission sticker design contest. The image will be printed on state park and forest annual vehicle admission stickers and will be displayed on more than 500,000 vehicles. Now in its 33rd year, the annual DNR-sponsored design contest is open to artwork submissions from high school-age students attending Wisconsin's public, private or parochial schools or home-schools. The DNR received about 150 entries this year. There are few better Christmas stocking stuffers than a Wisconsin State Park Sticker.

Don’t forget hunters, several migratory bird hunting seasons open this weekend. On Sept. 1, the early teal and goose seasons begin, as well as the Virginia and Sora Rail hunting. The Common Gallinule and Snipe also become legal as does the Mourning Dove. Remember hunters, you are allowed to harvest 15 mourning doves a day with a possession limit of 45.

Hunter Daymond, a 2019 Prescott alumnus, finished his abbreviated stint with the Minnesota Mud Puppies of the Northwoods League with an impressive batting average of .351. The Bemidji State junior played outfield for the Mud Puppies who finished the summer season fifth in the Great Plains West Division.

Headshaker of the week. During Saturday’s cross country meet fans of all ages - but of course mostly adults - were skirting the rules and standing in front of, and not behind the flagged off barriers near the finish line.  Even worse, some “fans” were darting across the course as runners nearing the end of the race. I just don’t understand it. But then again, the word fan is short for “fanatic” whose dictionary definition is “a person who is extreme and excessive in their enthusiasm about some type of activity.” Seems about right when talking about some of today’s adult bleacher occupiers. Nonetheless, it was a headshaker.
