Eight Prescott Cardinals earned the opportunity to compete at the WIAA State Track and Field Championships at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse this week. Bravo and brava to these athletes for their performances at the sectional meet and for advancing to the state’s highest level of competition. Senior Andrew Russell and junior Wyatt Budworth qualified in three relay events: the 4x100, 4x200, and 4x400. Joining them at state will be seniors Andrew Lesso and Jaylin Fleming in the 4x200 and 4x400 relays, along with juniors Reese Stanton and Ashton Marshall, who helped qualify the Cardinals in the 4x100 and 4x400 relays. On the girls’ side, junior Kyra Dix secured a state berth with a third-place finish in the 3,200-meter run. In the process, she lowered her own school record to 10:53.88. Prescott will also return to the state meet as the defending boys’ 4x100 relay champion. Good luck to all state competitors.
The final Wisconsin Baseball Coaches Association Poll of the season has the Prescott Cardinals (15-8) ranked #17 in Division 3. Other ranked teams playing in the same sectional as Prescott include #2 ranked Elk Mound (22-2) , #4 St. Croix Falls (21-1), #7 Fall Creek (20-3), and #12 Boyceville (20-1). The Kewaunee Storm are ranked #1 and are the only unbeaten in Division 3 sporting a record of 23-0. The Hudson Raiders are ranked #6 in Division 1.
The Prescott Pirates humbled the Ellsworth Hubbers on Sunday by a score of 11-1. Lefthander Cole Platson picked up the win and is now 3-0 on the season as Prescott’s hometown diamond heroes improved to 6-1 on the season.
From the WIAA: The Boys and State Hockey Tournaments will be held at LEGACY20 Arena in Middleton beginning in 2027. The venue has a seating capacity of 3,000 and is equipped with two 200-by-85-foot ice surfaces. The main surface will be indoors and used for the State Tournament games, and the second surface will be a covered outdoor ice surface that will operate as an arena during winter months. The arena also has suites intended for media broadcasting and work areas, administrative operations and partnership groups, as well as 12 locker rooms, four concession stands for the indoor ice facility.
College softball and baseball fans have enjoyed a steady diet of NCAA Division I tournament action over the past week, with ESPN serving up wall-to-wall coverage. The games themselves have been outstanding, featuring many of the nation's best teams trading blows in dramatic fashion. Unfortunately, the entertainment doesn't stop when the action leaves the field. Dugouts have become nearly as active as the games, with behavior that often seems better suited for a McDonald's Play Place than a national championship tournament. At this point, coaching staff might as well issue team pom-poms to the non-starters right after the national anthem. Players spend inning after inning performing choreographed cheers more commonly associated with pre-teen summer camps than elite college athletics. And while we're on the subject, I'm still trying to determine who pounds their chest more enthusiastically: the players, Koko the Gorilla, or Johnny Weissmuller playing Tarzan on the silver screen in the 1930’s and 1940’s.
From the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources: The DNR invites the public to head outdoors for the 14th annual Free Fun Weekend happening June 6-7, 2026. State park admission fees, fishing licenses and trail passes are waived for all visitors. With 50 state parks, 15 state forests, 44 state trails, 84,000 miles of rivers and streams and roughly 15,000 inland lakes, Wisconsin has something for everyone to enjoy. Free Fun Weekend is also an opportunity to try fishing for food or fun before purchasing an annual fishing license.
Headshaker of the Week. Oklahoma — where the wind comes sweeping down the plain. It's the state that produced baseball legends like Mickey Mantle, Johnny Bench and Willie Stargell. It’s home of the Cowboy Hall of Fame. And it's also home to the youth baseball coach who recently earned a lifetime ban after allegedly instructing his 12-year-old son to throw a baseball into the opposing team's dugout during a national tournament in Kansas City. As if that weren't enough, earlier in the week a youth game in Tahlequah, Okla. featured a fight involving several adult men and women, including a Tulsa police sergeant. Because apparently a 12-year-old baseball game now requires the same emotional investment as Game 7 of the World Series. Then there was the parent in Florida who reportedly displayed a firearm during an argument at a youth game involving 6-year-olds. Six-year-olds. The old joke used to be, "I went to a boxing match, and a hockey game broke out." In 2026, it may be more accurate to say, "I went to a Little League game, and a UFC event broke out." It’s all a headshaker.
