The Wisconsin Football Coaches Association 2025 All-Star Games were held Friday, July 18 and Saturday, July 19 at Titan Stadium in Oshkosh. Wide Receiver Will Packard and Offensive Lineman David Regnier represented Prescott in the annual event and Cardinal Head Coach Jordan Hansen served as a member of the North Small School Coaching Staff. Packard, an All-Conference and All District performer last fall, caught two passes as the North defeated the South by a score of 19-12. Fellow Middle Border Conference All Conference player Kane Donnelly of Somerset was the leading tackler for the North in the win.
The beginning of the 2025 Prescott Cardinals girls’ golf season is fast approaching. Head Coach Chad Salay and his charges begin their season on Aug. 11. The defending Middle Border Conference champions will be led by juniors Layla Salay and Macy Reiter who are both ranked by Wisconsin Golf as among the top 20 players in the class of 2027.
After working out with the Holmen Vikings on Tuesday and Wednesday, Prescott Head Football Coach Jordan Hansen, his staff, and players will do the same in Prescott on Thursday and Friday. Coach Hansen and his staff expect around 45 Prescott players to participate in the competitive workouts. The Cardinals finished 11-2 last season and Holmen ended their 2024 campaign with an overall record of 7-4.
Speaking of football, Wisconsin Sports Network reports there will be at least 72 new head football coaches roaming the sidelines this fall. Sadly, the trend continues.
Milton, Wis. native Gavin Kilen was the 13th pick in last week’s Major League Baseball Draft. The Louisville/Tennessee infielder was selected by the San Francisco Giants in the first round of the 2025 Draft. Michigan Infielder Mitchell Voit, who hails from Whitefish Bay, Wis. was also chosen late in the first round by the New York Mets with the 38th pick. The only Wisconsin High School player chosen was right-handed Pitcher Peter Kussow of Hartland-Arrowhead. A total of 12 players from America’s Dairyland were drafted this season.
Hats off to the Prescott Foundation for supporting the Prescott Pirates on Sunday as members ran the concession stand, held a 50-50 raffle, and hosted a competitive water balloon toss at the conclusion of the game. The Foundation recently provided financial support to the Prescott CAB (Crazy About Baseball) for reinforcing the outfield fence at Firehall Field. The Pirates lost to the first place Fighting Fish of River Falls.
From the WIAA: Several wrestling recommendations were approved by the WIAA Board last week, including one that restructures the Tournament Series for the 2025-26 season to balance the number of qualifiers across divisions, and another that eliminates the regional round of the tournament competition. Additionally, some coaches’ recommendations were approved in basketball addressing tournament seeding. Language will be added to the tournament procedures in the season regulations to include the percentage weight used in the formula for a team’s own win percentage and a team’s overall strength of schedule. Also, beginning in 2025-26, head-to-head contest results will be reviewed for all consecutive seeds, and when virtual statistical ties occur among three or more teams, head-to-head results will be reviewed among all respective tied teams. That’s easy to understand.
The Prescott Hall of Fame Committee will be meeting later this month and will announce the newest addition(s) to the Prescott Hall of Fame the first week of August. Look for more information regarding the sixth Prescott Hall of Fame banquet and induction ceremony in the coming weeks.
From the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources: The DNR recently shared the data from the annual spring survey of breeding waterfowl and indicated stable population numbers and habitat conditions for migratory birds. The data from this survey is used as part of the overall survey of breeding waterfowl in North America, and the information helps the DNR make management decisions about waterfowl in Wisconsin and has been conducted annually since 1973, except for 2020. Survey results are best interpreted as trends over several years rather than year-to-year comparisons. Surveyors estimated the state’s 2025 breeding duck population with a 7% increase from the 2024 estimate.
Headshaker of the Week. Laugh tracks. Seinfeld, Cheers, the Big Bang Theory, they all used them. For decades television comedies have used laugh tracks for two reasons: One to have viewers believe the show is being filmed in front of a live studio audience. And second, to let viewers know when it’s time to laugh. We have the same version of the laugh track at professional sporting events. And it happens at all venues: Twins/Brewers, Timberwolves/ Bucks, or Vikings/Packers. During the game multiple scoreboards will flash the pulsating words “Make Some Noise.” And like a dog trained to go to the door when they need to go to the bathroom, the fans in stands respond in kind. When the graphic disappears, so does the cheering. Time to go back to the phones and take selfies while eating their walking tacos. Fans being told by the scoreboard to cheer at professional sporting events? That’s a headshaker.
