Shots from the hip: Hall of Fame banquet is this weekend

This Saturday Ryan Berg, Jaci Kosin, and Steve Block will be inducted into the Prescott Hall of Fame. A 1974 graduate of Prescott High School, Berg is identified as one of the giants in the field of engineering, building a resume second to none in his field of both math and science. Jaci Kosin built one of the most successful dance programs in the Midwest, winning multiple state championships during her coaching career that tragically ended in 2005 when Coach Kosin lost her bout to cancer. Kosin received both state and national coaching awards and praise for her commitment to the Prescott Dance program Cardinal baseball coach Steve Block was the driving force behind the powerful Cardinal baseball teams of the late 1980’s and the 1990’s. Block skippered the Cardinals to seven conference championships and five trips to the state tournament, winning a state championship in 1994. Congratulations to the well deserving inductees. All three leave a legacy that should make them and their families beam with pride.

Doors open at 6 p.m. for Saturday’s Prescot Hall of Fame Banquet. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased at the Prescott High School website. Dinner will be served at approximately 6:45 p.m. with the induction program beginning at 7:30 p.m.

In the book of Judges, we read about Samson and his superior strength attributed to his long hair. When it comes to senior football player Nolan Thomley and his hair last Friday against the Amery Warriors, the opposite held true. Thomley, a high honors student, has always been known for his sizable hair. However, Thomley took to the shears last week and removed his signature mane. The result? Perhaps just a coincidence, but the speedy Thomley turned in his best performance of the year catching six passes for 185 yards and two touchdowns as Prescott trounced Amery by a score of 61-21.

Cardinal Quarterback Teddy Bernick has thrown for 1,392 yards and 15 touchdowns this season, ranking the junior signal caller eighth and 13th in the state of Wisconsin. Fellow junior Will Packard is Bernick’s favorite target with 458 yards receiving and seven touchdowns. Senior Nolan Thomley is close behind with 452 yards and five touchdowns. The speedy Thomley is averaging a whopping 32.3 yards per catch this fall.

Baldwin-Woodville and the Panthers of St. Croix Central enter the week ranked in the top 10 in Division IV. As predicted, Rice Lake has now cracked the top 10 in Division III.

The Prescott Cardinal volleyball team enters the week with an overall record of 21-8 after winning the Abbotsford Invitational Tournament this past weekend. The Cardinals marched to the title with dominating wins over Pembine-Goodman, Rosholt, and Colby. In the semi-final Prescott topped host Abbotsford and rolled over Stratford in the championship match. The Cardinals finished the day with a game record of 10-0.

Hmmm…Were sports fans of a half century ago as zealous as they are today? I remember growing up there was a guy named Marlyn Larson who used to scream and yell and holler at everything during basketball games. Everyone thought he was a cuckoo. Today, who knows, perhaps Marlyn Larson would be viewed as an expert in some circles. Also, 50 years ago, did adults wear the jerseys of their favorite teams when they watched games at the stadium or home in the living rooms? Today, it appears there are just as many, if not more, 48-year-olds wearing professional jerseys than 2-year-old toddlers donning the same in a family picture.

From the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources: Check out the latest edition of Wisconsin Natural Resources magazine on the department website. Impressive as always. A mailbox subscription for the popular Wisconsin outdoor publication is just $8.97 or you can subscribe online. A great gift for the holidays for anyone who enjoys outdoor Wisconsin.

Bravo to Prescott High School junior Will Packard and sophomore Toryn Branch for successfully harvesting impressive whitetail bucks recently. The Prescott High School students spent much of last week sharing tales of how each was successful in harvesting Wisconsin’s state wildlife animal. No, readers. The Badger is the state animal, not the state wildlife animal. Go ahead and look it up.

With a televised Major League Baseball game playing in the background, I was finishing up on some daily household chores. While putting away some silverware, all of a sudden heavy metal music and various pyrotechnic noises reminiscent of a WWF title match began to emanate from the television speakers. I couldn’t help but wonder if somehow the cat or dog had changed the channel. While turning to look at the TV I was expecting to see the Ultimate Warrior hitting Ric Flair over the head with a folding chair. Much to my surprise it was Minnesota Twins Pitcher Johan Duran entering the game from the bullpen. Sorry folks, I just don’t get it.

Amery and St. Croix Central are ranked #14 and #15 in the latest Wisconsin Cross Country Coaches Association State Coaches Poll.

Headshaker of the week. Whilst sitting among fans in the bleachers last Friday, I was reminded why choosing to watch the game from the stands can at times be unbearable. Throughout much of the first half one ornery Amery 40-something fan did nothing but deride his hometown team, athletic programs, and school. At one moment the narcissistic rooter remarked, “I offered to help coach football, but they said ‘no,’ so I guess they just like losing.” Listening to this self-proclaimed expert relentlessly criticize Amery players was too much for me. His tiresome commentary was even more annoying than the blaring music being played over the PA system. It was a headshaker.
