The Prescott Cardinal baseball team split its doubleheader on Saturday in Lake City. The Cardinals squeaked by Dover-Eyota by a score of 8-7 and dropped game two to Winona Cotter by a score of 5-1. Also on Saturday, the Prescott girls softball team swept their home non- conference doubleheader against Northwestern by scores of 15-4 and 6-5. This week, Head Baseball Coach Brad Matzek and Head Softball Coach Nick Johnson and their teams will play home and away games against Osceola, and will also travel to Fall Creek on Friday to take on the Crickets.
Prescott Head Boys Golf Coach Scott Hamilton and his charges head to Princeton Valley Golf Course in Eau Claire for a Middle Border Conference Invitational meet and then it’s off to the Reedsburg Country Club on Friday for a 20-team invitational tournament hosted by Platteville High School. The top scorer for the Cardinals thus far this season has been senior Shia Parmeter.
Somerset right-handed pitcher Mason Schmidt has started two games and both turned out to be combined no-hitters. The University of Milwaukee recruit has struck out 22 hitters in 10 innings and has yet to allow an earned run this season. And speaking of Somerset, the Spartan baseball committee decided to turf the baselines when they resurfaced their field last fall. A few area fields did the same a few years ago, including First National Bank of River Falls Field.
Hats off to Travis and Colton Wilson for their work connected to Bound Wisconsin, one of the best state clearinghouse sites for Badger State High School Athletics. It replaced the Wisconsin Sports Network as the go to site for Wisconsin prep sports. Be sure to check it out. Mind you, it remains a work in progress.

From the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources: The DNR reminds Wisconsinites of the protected tribal right to fish in certain Wisconsin waterways and the legal consequences they could face if found interfering with that right during the upcoming Ojibwe spring fishing season.
“The DNR fully supports Ojibwe sovereignty and the rights of tribal members to hunt, fish and gather in the Ceded Territories. These rights are guaranteed by federal treaty and affirmed by the judicial system,” said DNR Secretary Karen Hyun. “Any interference with tribal members engaged in this traditional practice is illegal and will not be tolerated. The safety of Ojibwe fishers is a top priority for the DNR, and any reports of violence or other harassment of tribal members exercising their treaty rights will be swiftly addressed.”
The DNR collaborates with the Ojibwe tribes and the Great Lakes Indian Fish and Wildlife Commission (GLIFWC) to uphold these tribal rights.
“Tribal members must be able to exercise their treaty rights in safety,” said Attorney General Josh Kaul. “Anyone who unlawfully interferes with the exercise of those rights should be prepared to face the consequences.”
Headshaker of the week: The Minnesota Twins will host the Philadelphia Phillies in the 2026 MLB Field of Dreams game on Aug. 13, 2026, in Dyersville, Iowa. This special regular-season game, returning after a short hiatus, will be held at the newly constructed permanent stadium next to the iconic movie site with the game being broadcast live on Netflix. Several websites said “tickets are selling fast” so I decided to check out the prices for the late summer inter league game. The cheapest, bargain price ticket was available for $4,688. A few tickets for $6,726 were also available. Unbelievable. I have to believe the ghost of W.P. Kinsella, the author of the book “Shoeless Joe” is turning over in his grave. Selling tickets near the Field of Dreams movie site for thousands of dollars? Now that’s a headshaker.
