The Prescott High School track teams opened their season this past weekend at the Knowles Center on the campus of the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. Senior sprinter Kobe Russell set a school record in the 55 meters with a time of 6.47. Micah Overland did the same in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.77. Head Coach Emily Calabrese and Assistant Coach Carl Calabrese called the day a rousing success with “59 total personal best performances from the athletes.” This Saturday the Cardinal thin clads will host the University of Wisconsin-Stout for an indoor meet involving over 20 schools in Divion 2 and 3.
Prescott senior Emelia Berg and her Team Wisconsin teammates finished second in the National High School Alpine Western Championship in Loveland, Colo. last weekend. Team Wisconsin edged out the third-place Minnesota team by three points to grab silver honors. Colorado finished atop the podium. For the combined men and women’s team event, Team Wisconsin took third overall. Berg finished 11th out of a field of 110 racers in the Slalom and also competed in the Giant Slalom in wrapping up her high school skiing career. A high honor student, Berg hopes to continue to compete at the collegiate level.
The best story coming out of this past weekend’s WIAA Boys State Basketball Tournament was the Reedsville Panthers winning their second state title. Their first was in 1946 when the Panthers defeated Eau Claire by a score of 48-39. Reedsville earned the distinction of being the smallest school in state history to win a championship. With a town population of 476 and a high school enrollment of 87, Reedsville defeated Racine Park and Wisconsin Rapids on their way to the title. Remember cager fans, this was at a time when there was only one class. No Class A, B, or C or Division 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5. The one class state tournament days are long gone, preserved through distant memories and old scrapbook newspaper clippings. However, the connection between the 2026 and 1946 Reedsville Panthers is more than just the colors of the team uniform. Reedsville Panther leading scorer Ben Prochnow is the great grandson of 1946 team member Hank Behnke. Go Panthers.
Forward Lila Posthuma wrapped up her second season with Bradley University and helped the Missouri Valley Conference team finish the season with an overall record of 20-13. A sophomore, Posthuma and her teammates qualified for the National Invitational Tournament but lost in the first round to George Washington University (DC) by a score of 63-60. Posthuma is a 2024 Prescott Cardinal alumnus.
From the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources: The DNR reminds anglers that the 2026-2027 inland trout season will open on April 4 and run through Oct. 15, 2026, increasing harvest opportunities throughout the state’s inland streams, springs and spring ponds. This year’s trout harvest season opens a month earlier than prior seasons. Trout populations are strong across most Wisconsin waters and this additional month of harvest will provide anglers more fishing opportunities during a time of the year when other fishing seasons are generally closed. This season change was strongly supported by the public during the DNR and Wisconsin Conservation Congress 2025 Spring Hearings. The DNR reminds anglers that there have been some changes to the trout daily bag and length limits this year, providing additional harvest opportunity on waters where trout populations are abundant and additional harvest is encouraged to meet management goals. Many of those changes include immediate release of brook trout on a number of Wisconsin streams.
Outfielder Joaquin Magee is hitting .300 and has a .500 on base percentage for the Raiders of Central Lakes College (Brainerd, Minn.) Pitcher/outfielder Cole Platson and the Dakota County Blue Knights will host a doubleheader with Alexandria Community College on Wednesday, April 1. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. Concordia St. Paul catcher Leah French and the rest of her Saints teammates opened their Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference with a doubleheader sweep against University of Mary (North Dakota) and followed with a Sunday sweep of Minot State. North Dakota State College of Science softball pitcher Ella Stewart was recently named Conference Pitcher of the Week. A 2024 Prescott grad, Stewart and her Wildcat teammates enter the week with an overall record of 25-2 and are the defending Junior College Athletic Association Division 3 National Champions.
Headshaker of the Week. The NCAA Tournament Bracket Contest - the annual tradition of many college cager fans. Many participants fill out their bracket like a seasoned analyst, only to watch it disintegrate faster than the snow from last week’s storm. Then stunningly, those same prognosticators launch a brand new “Sweet Sixteen bracket” as if this was their plan all along. It’s the sports equivalent of flipping the Monopoly or Sorry board and then insisting everyone restart because you “weren’t really trying before.” Hilarious. Creating a new “bracket contest” because your first one turned out to be a dud? Now that’s a headshaker.
