ELLSWORTH – In celebration of National Library Week, Ellsworth Public Library invites the public to a special screening of the Indie Lens documentary Free for All: The Public Library. This thought-provoking film will be followed by a community conversation about the vital role libraries play in our society today.
The event will take place 6-7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 9, and is part of the Indie Lens Pop-Up series, bringing the power of storytelling and open discussion to our community.
Free for All: The Public Library delves into the history of public libraries and the quiet revolutionaries who made them accessible to everyone. The documentary shines a spotlight on the pioneering women behind the “Free Library Movement” and the librarians of today who continue to serve the public, even amidst challenges such as library closures and book bans. The film celebrates libraries as civic institutions where resources are free and doors are open to all.
Filmmakers Dawn Logsdon and Lucie Faulknor take us on a journey through America’s beloved public libraries, capturing the human stories within and highlighting how these institutions have shaped our country. The film reminds us of the ongoing importance of libraries as a safe haven for communities nationwide.
This event is not just about watching a film; it’s about starting meaningful conversations within our community. The screening and discussion aim to address pressing local issues and provide valuable resources to those who need them most.
