RIVER FALLS – Careless discarding of smoking materials was the cause of a structure fire in River Falls reported Wednesday, Sept. 28.
At 1:51 p.m., the River Falls Fire Depart- ment (RFFD) responded to the fire at 226 N. Second St. The first unit arrived within just over three minutes of the initial dispatch. Re- sponders observed visible smoke and flames coming from the second story exterior stairway, which moved up the side of the structure into the attic space. Fire crews were able to get a quick initial extinguishment and contained the fire to one room and the attic space. Ex –
tinguishment in the attic space proved a little more divcult due to the design and layout of the attic space.
No residents or animals were injured as a result of the fire. Fire crews cleared the scene and returned to service at 4:49 p.m.
RFFD fire investigators determined that the fire started on a planter table adjacent to the second-floor entrance and was caused by care less discarding of smoking materials.
The fire department responded with 17 per – sonnel and four apparatus. No fire department injuries were reported.
