Superintendent’s column: EMS projects addressed in referendum

Posted

This is the second in a series of articles providing information about the Ellsworth Community School District’s April 2 Facility Referendum. In this article, I will focus on the middle school projects.

The vast majority of the proposed middle school projects are focused on replacing aging doors, windows, flooring, parking lots, and heating and ventilation (HVAC) systems that were original to the building when it opened nearly 30 years ago.

Other projects include the renovation of our locker bays to create collaborative learning environments while also improving student supervision and safety, renovations to our science labs, and renovations to the Career and Technical Education (CTE) rooms to promote student engagement in courses related to the trades, engineering, and business.

Each year, we focus on a number of high priority maintenance projects in all of our buildings, but annual school district budgets do not provide for the long-term needs that build in the area of facility maintenance. Here are some examples of recent projects completed at the middle school as a part of our annual maintenance planning processes.

  • Student and teacher classroom furniture replacement in all classrooms (2022-2023)
  • Chiller (air conditioning) unit replacement (2022-2023)
  • Exterior block maintenance and replacement (2021-2022)
  • Phone system replacement (2021-2022)
  • Security camera upgrades (2021-2022)
  • Gymnasium renovation including gym floor and bleacher replacement along with painting. (2019-2020)
  • Carpet/flooring replacement in classrooms and offices (budgeted yearly as needed)

On our referendum webpage https://www.ellsworth.k12.wi.us/page/facility-referendum-2024  you will find a link to a short (2 ½ minute) informational video outlining projects at our middle school that are being addressed through our April 2 Facilities Referendum. Additional videos will also focus on other proposed projects to provide a good visual look at a number of the conditions to be addressed while also providing information about avenues to improve student learning spaces and school safety.

I hope you find this article and the available video helpful in better understanding the proposed middle school projects. If there are any questions about any of the projects being proposed in the April 2 Facilities Referendum, please give me a call at 715-273-3900 or email me at cainb@ellsworth.k12.wi.us
