Spring Valley enters the final week of the season 6-2 with a 5-1 conference record. Those results have the Cardinals tied for the Dunn-St. Croix’s top spot with Glenwood City. Spring Valley beat Glenwood City 28-14 on the road Oct. 2 to bring the battle for the title all the way to the final week. Spring Valley plays Osseo-Fairchild (3-5 this season) and Glenwood City plays Chetek-Weyerhaeuser (2-6 this season), both at home. The Cardinals had a scare Friday night against a Colfax team that is winless in conference play. The Cardinals were tied 7-7 thanks to a Sam Schmitt 65-yard touchdown, and the Vikings kept the score tied all the way into the fourth quarter. Ultimately, it was Asher Turner, who nearly collected 200 total yards, that scored on a pitch at the goal line with 10 minutes to play to win 14-7. Colfax drove deep into Spring Valley territory on the final drive but was stopped on fourth down and 12.
River Falls got an important win 24-8 over Rice Lake to improve to 4-4 overall and 4-2 in the Big Rivers Conference. Rice Lake was winless, but the pressure was on the Wildcats to perform due to how tight the middle portion of the BRC is this season. With the win, the Wildcats are locked into an above .500 conference record with one last road game against Menomonie on deck.
With a 3-5 overall record, the Elmwood/Plum City Wolves have a lot to play for during the final week at home against a great Boyceville team. The Bulldogs are going to come into the game extra hungry. Being just a game out of the conference’s top spot, there is still an outside chance that Boyceville could share the conference title.
At 1-7 and 0-8 on the year, Prescott and Ellsworth will see an end to their playoff streaks. Both teams made some improvements as the year has gone along, but the Middle Border Conference is tough this season.
Prescott is home for the final game of the season, taking on an Amery team that is 3-3 in Middle Border Conference play. The Panthers have a date with Altoona on the road, a Railroader team with a 2-4 record in MBC play. Both squads have senior classes that the coaches are hoping they can send off on the right note.
The reveal show to see which teams are in the playoffs and where they will be playing is Saturday.
