PLUM CITY — Gwen Glaus loves business. That’s why 15 years ago she began a successful bakery from scratch in an old brick building on Main Street of the small town of Plum City, Wis. It was a delightful set-up with strong community response. Two key components contributed to her success: great products and great people.

But when health concerns interrupted the flow of her business three years ago, the Bittersweet Bakery closed leaving her building empty. Glaus and her husband, Todd, offered the building for sale but got no bites. So they decided they needed to take a step.

“We have to do something with the building,” she said.

Although the Plum City native loved the bakery, the pair of opportunists began to consider new options.

While displaying at a craft show prior to COVID she noticed the relationship between vendors and the public. Each had needs to be met. Ideas began to percolate. Todd and Gwen decided a gift shop with a novel twist would work in their structure. Gwen captured the ideas and Tom helped put it together. The outcome is and welcoming. The juxtaposed light and airy curtains with the original rustic bricks outlines a small town boutique with a great attention to detail where the owner has creatively woven the artistic flare of her family members throughout the multi-room shop.

Even the name of the store was a consensus.

“I thought about how often people drive through town and have to stop for a duck to waddle across the street from Plum City’s trademark pond with her babies,” Glaus said.

After pitching the idea to her husband they agreed The Waddling Duck would be an extension of their community and an intriguing place to stop. With the creative flare of Designs by Jill, a unique sign now distinctively hangs over the door.

Filling the shelves

Last winter the Plum City businesswoman sent a letter to crafters and artists offering an opportunity to gain what may have been lost through COVID shut-downs by joining her business venture as consigners. According to Glaus, the response has been great, with very few challenges.

“I worked in a flower shop in Durand for 15 years before the bakery,” she said. “I learned a lot there.”

Aside from her comfort with customer service, it’s obvious displays are what she enjoys. The blending and merging of vendors’ items will entice shoppers to keep looking. Gwen is “pretty picky” about what she sells. Twentyone vendors are sharing in the space. From locally-made honey and syrups to jewelry and hand-made blankets, plus chocolates and gift cards, there is something for everyone.

“It’s rewarding. It has been so fun putting it all together,” said Glaus.

She is quick to acknowledge her many family members and close friends who have worked with her. Not to mention her community.

“They are very, very supportive. You couldn’t ask for a better community,” she said.

The Waddling Duck opens May 19. Hours will be Wednesdays through Fridays 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

“The bakery was wonderful. This will be good too.”
