Top-ranked Prescott playing like the best

It was a great afternoon at Clifton Highlands Monday.

It was perfect weather for a round of golf, and the home Prescott Cardinals again showed their Middle Border Conference opponents why they are the top-ranked team in Division 2.

Ava Salay dominated at the meet with a score of 37 to guide the Cardinals to the win with a team score of 188.

Jessica Heinsch shot a 48 for Prescott, while Liz Rohl had a 51, Maddie Reiter shot a 52 and Rhi Stutz had a 53.

New Richmond too and St. Croix Central tied for second at the meet with 195 team points, followed by Baldwin-Woodville 224, Somerset 227, Osceola 232, Ellsworth 235 and Amery 261.

In the first rankings of teams by the Golf Coaches Association of Wisconsin, Prescott is ranked number one, followed by Saint Croix Central, Wrightstown, Xavier, Denmark, Edgewood, Freedom, Little Chute, Arcadia/Independence, The Prairie School and Lakeside Lutheran.

“We are certainly humbled by the golf coaches across the state of Wisconsin recognizing us as the #1 ranked team in the state. I think some coaches and teams may feel a little uneasy about a status like that but we do not. The girls understand that our goal is not to be the top ranked team the 4th week of the season, it’s to be the top team at the end of the season. We are working every day to make that happen,” said Prescott Coach Chad Salary.

Prescott stands atop the Middle Border leaderboard, four points ahead of New Richmond with two regular season competitions left, Thursday at Ellsworth and Sept. 21 at Pheasant Hills.

“We are very pleased with how the season has progressed. With the exception of one event we have been able to win each event fairly comfortably and it has been a team effort at each event. I trust golfers 1-5 to put up a score that will count towards our four and that is a luxury that not many programs have. The honest truth is we have about 7-8 girls that could post a varsity score that could count towards our four counted scores in any given event. The problem is we can only play five. That shows the unbelievable depth we have on our team,” said Salay. “Looking forward, we have put ourselves in a great place to challenge for the conference title. Thursday in Ellsworth and Monday at Pheasant Hills are two huge events, both courses we have played very well at so we are looking at matching past performances and hopefully making it easier on ourselves heading into the conference championship.”
