Trash or treasure? Ask antiques expert Mark Moran at appraisal event

PRESCOTT – Prescott Public Library will host an antique appraisal event from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 16 in the city council chambers at 800 Borner St. N., Prescott. Participants can get family heirlooms and other possessions appraised at no cost by Mark Moran, an antiques expert who has worked with various forms of collectibles for over 30 years and has served as a guest expert on the PBS show “Antiques Roadshow.” Program registration is required for this event, and limitations apply.

Moran is not a stranger to the Prescott community. In 2025, his visit brought over 50 participants to PPL.

“We had a lot of people stop in and ask if they could just sit and watch, to which my response was a resounding ‘Yes’!” says Darien Becker, Program & Outreach Coordinator at PPL. “Mark is such a fun, engaging speaker. This program almost feels like a course in antiquities, but the three hours just fly by!”

Moran fondly remembers the time he visited Prescott over a decade ago as one of his favorite appraisals. When a gentleman brought in a painting, Moran recalls that “[the gentleman] said he bought the painting for $10 at a yard sale, [and] it sold at auction for $19,680 with buyer’s premium.”

Some people who get appraisals don’t even have to attend the event as Moran welcomes at-home appraisals for larger or more fragile items ($75 per hour; free mileage if within 10 miles from Prescott Public Library). To schedule an at-home appraisal, Moran requests that you contact him by phone (715-281-5060) or email (moranm1953@gmail.com). Spots fill up quickly, so library staff suggest that you register as soon as possible to secure your spot. More information and the registration form can be found on the library
