Prescott softball’s Regional championship hit the road to Stanley-Boyd for the Sectional Semi-final. The Cardinals fell behind 3-0 after three, a scoreline that held all the way until the sixth inning.
The Cardinals got a run back when Quinn Unser singled on a ground ball to third base that skipped off the defender’s leg into no man’s land. Down 3-1 in the seventh, a hit by pitch and a walk brought up Cadyn Hillebrand with two on and one out. Hillebrand hit a line drive to center that scored a run. Izzy Thoen then singled to score two more and take a 4-3 lead.
In the bottom of the inning, the Orioles hit a one-out double, but pitcher Grace Ptacek forced some soft contact to get out of the inning and move onto the Sectional Final.
Prescott played 22-1 Spooner in Cumberland, a team whose record says it all. The Rails hit well, pitch well and field well. The team is led by Annalie Lindgren, who has an unheard of 50 hits in 69 at-bats. Lindgren has 12 doubles, eight triples and seven home runs this season.
Lindgren went 0-for-2 at the plate against Prescott; however, she went the distance in the circle in a 5-4 win.
Spooner led off the scoring in the bottom of the fourth with a pair of runs. Prescott answered back with four in the top of the fifth, coming on a Payton Tri sacrifice fly, a Hillebrand single to score a pair and a single from senior Talli Roth.
Prescott came so close to pulling off the win in Cumberland, getting the first two batters out in the bottom of the sixth, but a hit and an error opened a window for an RBI double, and another error got Spooner the lead, all with two outs. Tri singled to center to start the seventh, but could not score after being advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt.
River Falls’ season came to an end at the hands of Marshfield 11-1 in the Sectional Semi-final. Marshfield racked up nine first inning runs, which the Wildcats could not overcome in the five-inning loss. The lone run came in the fifth inning, when Reagan Scherz singled to right to score Dani Poellinger.
It was a special season for the Wildcats, winning the team’s first ever Regional title 4-3 over No. 1 Tomah in a 10-inning thriller, a team that’s pitcher is heading to the Wisconsin Badgers in the fall.
The Wildcats set the tone for the type of program they want to be, playing hard until the final out of the season.
