BAY CITY – According to a Pierce County Sheriff’s Office report, the playground fire in Bay City on Thursday, May 13 was caused by two juveniles lighting notebook paper on fire.
The fire at Saratoga Park (W6389 Pepin St.) was reported to local authorities about five minutes after it started, around 4:39 p.m.
The Pierce County Sheriff’s officer on duty who responded, Rick Huneke, wrote in the incident report, “As I was in the area of the playground I was notified it was on fire. Fire responded and put out the fire. Juvenile’s located that started the fire on accident.”
The juveniles were found hiding near the train tracks. When questioned by their parents and the officer, they admitted to starting the fire accidentally with a lighter.
