UFO Days adds professional wrestling event to loaded schedule

ELMWOOD – Many towns have a summer festival that brings everyone together for fun, food and entertainment, but Elmwood’s UFO Days are one of the most unique you will find.

Elmwood is celebrating its 44th annual UFO Days, which is dedicated to the area’s long history of UFO sightings. This year’s festival running from July 28-30 is bringing a new slate of entertainment to go along with some of the long-time favorites.

One of these additions is an American Wrestling Federation (AWF) professional wrestling show right on Main Street. The show, which is free admission, takes place 2-4 p.m. Saturday, July 29.

An AWF promoter reached out to the people in charge of UFO Days, saying it would be a good addition to the schedule, and Amy Bechel said it was something they were willing to try.

“We’ve never thought of having wrestlers before he approached us, and it seemed like we could make something work,” Bechel said.

Bechel said the event is special due to how unique it is. UFO Days is not only a large annual festival, but also a nod to Elmwood’s long UFO history.

“One of the tour guides on the bus tours, he was actually in the car when he was four-and-a-half, and was witness to a UFO,” Bechel said.

At the festival you can see extraterrestrial costumes, masks and decorations. Because of how special the festival is to Elmwood, many of the locals go big with their planning.

The event is free to attend, has free parking and the activities are free. The only things that cost money are food and souvenirs.

With the festival being in an area with a population of less than 1,000, it takes everyone in the community being involved to make things work. Bechel said the community members, high school sports teams, 4-H clubs and more all get involved to show what Elmwood is all about.

“It’s nice to be able to work with family and friends, and promote the community that other people are as interested as me,” Bechel said.

Cosmic Ambassador Sara Comeau will be the first cosmic ambassador to speak at the event. Comeau will discuss why there have been so many UFO sightings in Elmwood. Comeau will dive into whether it has to do with the rock quarries, the electrical grid or another factor.

Comeau is also doing a group spirit reading Saturday at 3 p.m.

Adrian Lee, host of the show “Unscripted Paranormal,” will be discussing ghosts and UFOs at 5:30 p.m. Saturday.

Another new speaker is Tom Maher, Minnesota’s Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) director.

Danielle Gray, author of “100 Things to do in Wisconsin Before You Die,” will be doing a book sale and signing, with proceeds going back to the community.

There are plenty more new faces and places to check out, with art, inflatable slides and bounce houses and additional new speakers.

Those looking to get involved in the festivities can head to the Elmwood Public Library from Wednesday to Friday to make an alien mask to wear to Sunday’s 2 p.m. parade.
