RIVER FALLS – Renowned composer Jin Hi Kim will showcase her innovative Korean musicianship during a performance at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls for the university’s 58th Commissioned Composer Concert.

Kim will perform at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 14, in Abbott Concert Hall in the Kleinpell Fine Arts building, 420 E. Cascade Ave., River Falls. The concert is free and open to the public.

As part of the Commissioned Composer series, Kim will be on campus for a residency March 12-14. She will discuss her new composition, “Vocalization in Motion,” during an assembly at 11 a.m. March 14, in 129 Kleinpell Fine Arts.

Kim is known as a musical pioneer for her work with the komungo, a traditional Korean stringed instrument that dates to ancient times. She has introduced the instrument into the American contemporary music scene and has gained acclaim for her solo performances on the world’s only electric komungo. Her performances can involve interactive computer programs, part of her large-scale multimedia shows.

Kim is a Guggenheim Fellow composer, a U.S. Artist Fellow and has performed around the world and at such notable locations as Carnegie Hall, the Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Her musical works have been commissioned by notable performers around the world.

She has received positive performance reviews from such outlets as The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Los Angeles Times and other publications. Kim received the New England Foundation for the Arts Rebecca Blunk Fund Award to create her work titled “A Ritual for Covid-19” in memory of people who died around the world during the pandemic.
UW-River Falls Professor Emeritus Conrad De Jong began the Commissioned Composer Project in 1967, making it the longest-standing program of its kind in the U.S and shining a national spotlight on the UW-River Falls Music Department.

Each year since, UW-River Falls commissions a composer to write a piece of music for the student body. The composer also makes a campus visit to interact with the students and take part in the premiere performance of that work.
