RIVER FALLS – The University of Wisconsin-River Falls Finance Team claimed first place in the CFA Institute Research Challenge local finals in February. The team bested 16 other regional institutions to take home the university’s first win in the event, showcasing their skills in financial analysis and professional ethics.
Team members included College of Education, Business and Allied Health (CEBAH) students Bailey Sauvé, a junior majoring in business administration; Luke Heggestad, a junior double majoring in marketing-professional sales and finance; and Jared Organ, a junior double majoring in finance and economics.
"Through composure, confidence and a steadfast commitment to our thesis, we secured the win," said Sauvé, who served as team captain.
The CFA Institute Research Challenge is a global competition offering university students hands-on mentoring and training in areas like analytical techniques, valuation, report writing and presentation skills. Students gain real-world experience as research analysts, preparing for careers in the financial sector.
The regional competition, hosted by CFA Minnesota, tasked teams with analyzing and defending an assessment of Sun Country Airlines.
"Our ability to quickly interpret news and assess its impact on the company’s financial outlook played a key role in strengthening our investment thesis and solidifying our sell recommendation," explained Heggestad.
“This win is a testament to the exceptional quality of our students and the academic programs in our AACSB-accredited School of Business and Economics,” said CEBAH Dean Muhammad Chishty.
With the victory, the team advances to the sub-regional competition the week of March 10, with results posted at the end of March.
"This experience has significantly enhanced my understanding of equity research," said Organ. "It has also opened up post-graduation opportunities I never knew existed."
