Volunteers bring Prescott FD “famous” pancakes on the road to feed Prescott Nursing & Rehab residents

Prescott – The Prescott Fire Department’s World Famous Pancake Breakfasts through the Lent season attract up to 500 people each week. The breakfast feast features pancakes, sausages and eggs (even green ones on St. Patrick’s Day Sunday), served in the fire station by members of the department.

The events raise money for things the fire department’s budget doesn’t allow for, including equipment and clothing. The Easter bunny will even be making a stop at the final breakfast this coming Sunday from 8 a.m. to noon.

In addition to being a great family event, some community volunteers, with the help of local businesses and the Prescott Community Club, have for 13 years also been bringing the breakfast up to Prescott Nursing & Rehabilitation Community for the residents there to enjoy.

“We started bringing up breakfast here to someone we knew,” said Mike Hunter, who with wife, Debbie, makes it a weekly tradition during breakfast season. “We decided we’d see if we could get some help and bring it up for all the residents. That was in 2011, and we’ve been doing it ever since.”

Over the years, many local businesses and citizens have stepped up to help pay for the breakfasts.

“Ptacek’s IGA has always been there for us, every year,” said Mike Hunter. “We’ve had a lot of businesses step up to help us. This community is so supportive.”

Prescott Nursing & Rehab also helps out.

Many times, Boy Scouts and Girls Scouts are on hand to help with the community service.

“The people here just absolutely love it,” said Hunter. “They tell us that no one is late for breakfast.”

The fire department crew gets in a little early to cook for the residents, and the food is delivered promptly at 8 a.m. Residents are at the ready to dig in when plates are dished up.

“It’s so great that they do this,” said Prescot Nursing & Rehab Administrator Jill Ameda. “It means a lot to everyone here. It’s such a great community service.”

The Prescott Community Club was eager to jump on board. Formerly the Kiwanis, charitable donations can be made through the club to help pay for the breakfasts.

“We’re here for the community. It’s what we’re all about,” said Julie Moe of the Prescott Community Club. She said reidentifying as the Prescott Community Club allows more local control of funds.

Moe and Tara Buechner were on hand Sunday to help lend a hand, taking direction from the kitchen on which orders went where in the dining room.

“We’re excited to be able to be here,” she said. “We’re excited about some of the things we have coming up in Prescott Community Club. We’re working on a lot of things to help in Prescott, and we want to do a lot of projects to help the community’s kids.”

On Sunday, they took time to help the young at heart.

“This is just great,” said Mike Hunter. “It’s really a great service for the community.”
