Walter “Bud” Blodgett, a man whose life was defined by service, family, and a profound dedication to his community, passed away peacefully on Oct. 2, 2026, at Preferred Senior Living in Ellsworth, Wis. Born on June 24, 1932, in Trimbelle Township, Pierce County, Wis., Bud was the beloved son of Eldon and LaGarda Blodgett.
From an early age, Bud embodied the spirit of resilience and determination. After completing the eighth grade, he embraced the “school of hard knocks” by working on a family farm in the Brasington area of Maiden Rock before moving with his family to St. Paul, Minn. His journey was marked by grit and tenacity, attributes that would carry him through a lifetime of achievements.
In 1949, Bud answered the call of duty and joined the United States Marine Corps, serving with distinction until 1953. Rising to the rank of sergeant, Bud served in the Korean War and considered himself a lifelong Marine. His service was a testament to his unwavering patriotism and commitment to his country.
On June 7, 1955, Bud married the love of his life, Mary Ann Demuth, in Ellsworth, Wis. Together, they built a warm and loving home where they raised their seven children: Gwen Swanson (Darrell), John (Kathy), Jane, Mark (Tammy), Walter, Phillip (Liz), and Linda Hines (Jeff). His legacy lives on through his family, which includes his sister Jo Beth, 16 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
After his military service, he worked in a variety of roles, from hauling milk and trucking beer before Bud’s entrepreneurial spirit flourished after founding Ellsworth Farm Service in the late 1960s. He operated the business until 1983 before relocating with Mary Ann to Phoenix, Ariz. There, he applied his sales acumen in building supplies, eventually founding and operating Specialty Windows and Doors with his son John. They then later lived in Bull Shoals, Ark. for 20 years before moving back to Ellsworth in 2018.
Bud’s engagement with his community was as dynamic as his career. As a volunteer fireman and a life member of the Moose Lodge, American Legion, and VFW, he was a fixture in the places he lived. His contributions were marked by his pivotal role in establishing a food pantry in Bull Shoals, Ark., demonstrating his commitment to helping those in need.
An avid hunter and fisherman, Bud’s affinity for the outdoors was complemented by his exceptional marksmanship, honed during his time in the Marines. His creative talents were evident in his woodworking passion and the unique contraptions he crafted, including a portable buzz saw and a guillotine-style multi-log wood splitter.
Known affectionately as “Big B” for his formidable presence and fearless nature, Bud was a natural leader whose strength and compassion inspired those around him. His children carry forward his legacy of hard work, integrity, and entrepreneurial spirit. Bud was predeceased by his parents, his brother John “Jack,” and sisters Polly Granheim, Shelby Hartman, Janice Spartz, and Sharon Blodgett. His family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the memory care staff at Preferred Senior Living for their exceptional care and support.
A funeral service to celebrate Bud’s remarkable life will be held at noon Oct. 15, 2026, following visitation at 10 a.m. at St. Francis Church in Ellsworth, Wis. A burial service with military honors will be at the Trimbelle Cemetery following the church service. A luncheon will be served after the funeral service at the St. Francis Parish Hall.
