ELLSWORTH — Every summer, the streets of Ellsworth come alive with the sights, sounds, and irresistible smells of one of the Midwest’s most beloved hometown events: the Cheese Curd Festival. Held June 27–28 in Ellsworth’s East End Park and business district, the festival celebrates the town’s claim to fame, the fresh, squeaky cheese curds produced by Ellsworth Creamery, the festival’s presenting sponsor and a cornerstone of the local economy.
Named the Cheese Curd Capital of Wisconsin in 1984, Ellsworth takes pride in its rich dairy tradition. The Ellsworth Creamery processes more than 160,000 pounds of cheese curds each day, distributing them across the world and building a brand that’s synonymous with quality and flavor. But once a year, Ellsworth brings it all home, inviting visitors to experience the curds in their finest form: freshly made, beer-battered, fried, and paired with regional beer, wine, and hard cider.
The festival's national appeal continues to grow. Since 2023, USA Today has recognized the Cheese Curd Festival as one of its 10Best Specialty Food Festivals in the country, placing Ellsworth on the map as a must-visit destination for food lovers from across the U.S.
"The Cheese Curd Festival is more than a food event," says Chamber Executive Director Kim Beebe. "It’s a celebration of everything that makes Ellsworth special. Our agricultural heritage, our tight-knit community, and the small-town pride that puts our cheese curds on the map."
The two-day event draws nearly 30,000 visitors and is organized by the Ellsworth Chamber of Commerce. Festival proceeds directly benefit local nonprofits, volunteer groups, and community projects.
This year’s festival kicks off at 4 p.m. Friday, June 27, and runs through 10 p.m. Saturday June 28. Admission is free, with food and beverages available for purchase, with ticketed specialty tasting events. Free parking and a free shuttle service will also be available to help guests make their way to the festival grounds without the need to search for parking.
Highlights of the 2025 Festival include:
Cheese Curd Central: The heart of the festival, featuring fresh and deep-fried cheese curds — including this year’s signature flavor: Hot Honey. This limited-edition curd offers the perfect balance of sweet and heat, with a touch of cayenne and a smooth honey finish. Deep-fried Natural and the festival’s popular Cinnamon Sugar dessert curds will also be served hot and fresh from the fryer.
But that’s just the beginning. In Food Truck Alley, vendors take the humble curd to the next level with bold, mouthwatering creations like Hot Buffalo Cheese Curd Tacos, the InHognito Burger with a crispy cheese curd skirt, loaded Brisket Cheese Curd Poutine, and even an InCurdable Fried Apple Pie. With dozens of unique dishes to try, it’s a delicious reminder that in Ellsworth, cheese curds are more than a snack, they’re an art form.
Taste of Wisconsin: Curated tasting experiences highlight the best of the state’s culinary scene. Ticketed events include Craft & Curd, Corks & Kegs, and the ever-popular Block Party cheese tasting. An ice cream tasting and milk and cookie pairing offer fun, family-friendly options that spotlight Wisconsin’s dairy heritage in a sweet way.
Artisan Market & Family Fun: More than 50 artisan vendors will be on hand, showcasing handmade goods, gourmet treats, and regional specialties. Children can enjoy the straw bales in the Kid’s Playland, face painting, lawn games, and more.
Live Music & Entertainment: Multiple stages will feature live performances throughout the weekend. Take in the car show on Friday night and compete for the title of fastest curd eater during the Cheese Curd Eating Contest on Saturday.
While food is at the heart of the experience, the Cheese Curd Festival is also a celebration of Ellsworth’s community spirit. Hundreds of volunteers contribute to the festival’s success each year. To date, the event has returned more than $120,000 in financial support to community organizations through direct donations made in exchange for their volunteer hours.
"This event has become a signature moment for Ellsworth," says Beebe. "It connects us to our roots, supports our local businesses, and gives visitors an unforgettable experience, one curd at a time."
