HUDSON — River Falls took to Hudson on Jan. 15 for a gymnastics meet against Hudson and Superior. A 134.625 score was plenty enough to beat Superior, but the Wildcats fell just short of Hudson’s 134.85 score.
The Wildcats are off to a nice start to the year, including second place finishes at the Winter Wonderland Invite and at the Snowflake Invite. At the Winter Wonderland Invite, River Falls scored a season-best 137.175.
While River Falls did not have its best score of the season Jan. 15, Hudson did by over a point, creating a perfect storm to take the meet.
Individually, River Falls had four of the top five all-around scorers, with Ruby Amundson winning the meet with a 35.450, Mckenna Cook taking third with a 32.6, Tirfe L’Allier taking fourth with a 32.575 and Bella Franklin taking fifth with a 31.650.
Amundson won the vault handily with a 9.350, far exceeding the 9.100 second place score from Superior’s Avery Waletzko. Amundson and Ava Petraitis took second and third on bars with scores of 8.650 and 8.400. Amundson also won floor with a 9.150. Franklin took third with an 8.775 for River Falls on floor.
River Falls has over a month to go in the regular season, with an upcoming home triangular against Chippewa Falls and Eau Claire Memorial on Jan. 29. Given their showings at the larger invitational events, the Wildcats may have what it takes for a postseason run both as individuals and as a team.
