The River Falls High School softball team won its third game of the season Friday afternoon against the Somerset Spartans. The Wildcats crushed the Spartans 9-2 all but securing their victory during a six-run sixth inning.
RFHS softball head coach, Chantele Torrez, spoke on the victory coming from success on road games this year.
“We actually have played very well on the road this year. We have a big win at Menomonie, and close games at Memorial, Rice Lake and Chippewa Falls. Our players have a lot of fun on bus trips, listening to music, dancing and singing, which seems to help them get hyped up for games,” said Torrez.
Second baseman Ali Laube and starting pitcher Avery Amidon were the stars of Friday’s victory over Somerset. Both Laube and Amidon had three-hit games while Amidon threw a complete game giving up only five hits and one walk.
Although the RFHS softball team’s record is not how they would like it to be, sitting at an overall record of 3-10 after Friday’s game, they are still finding success as a team even in their losses.
Torrez also spoke about the importance of team chemistry and playing as a team this season.
“Honestly, we win as a team and lose as a team. I don't think one player will determine a game for us. When all nine batters in our lineup hit the ball hard and string base hits together, we score runs and win games. Our outfield made some really impressive plays on Tuesday against Chippewa, robbing two home runs. It's really been fun to see kids playing with no fear. Going all out for fly balls, and diving to make plays. When someone makes a big time play like that, the whole mood shifts and our energy levels rise. That is when good things happen for our team,” she said.
The Wildcats’ next game is against Prescott at home this Wednesday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. This will be the first and only match-up between the Wildcats and Cardinals this season.
