Woman charged with using fake military ID in bank fraud

HAGER CITY – A woman using fake military IDs stole thousands from a Hiawatha Bank customer’s account last week.

Jessica Rose Levine, 35, no address listed, was ordered to pay $20,000 cash bond June 29 in Pierce County Circuit Court on felony misappropriate ID info – obtain money and felony fraud against financial institution ($500-$10,000) charges. If convicted, she faces a maximum penalty of six years in prison and/or fines up to $10,000 on each charge.

According to the complaint:

At 11:29 a.m. June 25, a Pierce County deputy was dispatched to Hiawatha National Bank in Hager City (town of Trenton) for an individual who had fraudulently withdrawn $9,200 from someone else’s account. Earlier, the same woman had withdrawn $3,200 from the Hiawatha branch in Maiden Rock.

The bank manager told police the woman had made the two withdrawals using someone else’s name and identifying information. Both times, Levine used the same victim’s name and information to obtain the money. The manager gave police photos of Levine from the bank’s surveillance system. The deputy recognized the woman as he had seen her walking in the area earlier in the day when she had waved at him.

According to bank tellers, Levine entered the Hager City branch around 10:40 a.m. She was about 5 feet, 5 inches tall with short brown hair and three missing upper front teeth. She presented a military ID card with the victim’s identifying information, then asked to withdraw $9,200 from a home equity line of credit. She told them she and her husband were adding a mother-in-law suite to their existing home. She claimed to need the cash so the builders would give her a cash discount. One teller completed the computer work while another teller went into the vault to retrieve the cash. While the teller was preparing the cash to disburse to the woman, the woman made a joking comment along the lines of “can’t you just count it out fast in front of me?” The woman left around 10:50 a.m. with the money.

Shortly after she left, the manager said she believed the woman was impersonating a legitimate cardholder. Levine was arrested at a third Hiawatha branch in Hudson, where she was using a fake military ID, though not the same ID she had used in Hager City. The name in the Hudson case was a different victim. A Pierce County deputy responded to the Hudson bank around 12:30 p.m., where he learned Levine had been arrested and transported to St. Croix County Jail.

Security footage from the Hudson branch matched the woman from the Maiden Rock and Hager City videos. She was wearing the same clothing in all three. Hudson police seized multiple cards during the arrest with the name Jessica Levine on them, a fraudulent U.S. Army ID and passport in another woman’s name (with Levine’s photo) and another U.S. Army ID with a second woman’s name and Levine’s photo.

Since she obtained no money in Hudson, police decided PCSO would arrest her. She told officers that her driver’s license is out of New York. She was taken to Pierce County Jail without incident.

Levine’s next court appearance is a preliminary hearing scheduled for 1:30 p.m. July 2.
