ELLSWORTH –Ellsworth Public Library can’t wait for you to join us for a fiesta celebrating children, books and literacy! The event will take place from 4-5:30 p.m. Thursday, April 30 and features bilingual fun for all ages!

Meet Pete the Cat, the grooviest cat around and star of his own series of books! He’ll be here to take photos, greet guests, and share some totally laid-back vibes. There will also be craft activities, carnival games, refreshments and every child in attendance will select a free book to take home.

El día de los niños/El día de los libros (Children's Day/Book Day), commonly known as Día, is a celebration every day of children, families, and reading that culminates yearly on April 30. In many countries throughout Central and South America, April 30 is celebrated as El día de los niños or Children’s Day. Latina author, Pat Mory, worked with the American Library Association to connect this celebration of children with a commitment to bring book joy to all children, every day.

Día is a nationally recognized initiative that emphasizes the importance of literacy for all children of all linguistic and cultural backgrounds. It is a daily commitment to link children and their families to diverse books, languages, and cultures.

The common goals of all Día programming are to:

  • Celebrate children and connect them to the world of learning through books, stories, and libraries.
  • Nurture cognitive and literacy development in ways that honor and embrace a child’s home language and culture.
  • Introduce families to community resources that provide opportunities for learning through multiple literacies.
  • Recognize and respect culture, heritage and language as powerful tools for strengthening families and communities.

Don’t miss out on this special celebration of children, books, and literacy! For more information about this event and other upcoming activities, stop by the library or visit www.ellsworthlibrary.org. We can’t wait to see you there!
