Ellsworth High School alumna and missionary Leann Peterson has been in Gdansk, Poland, for six weeks now, where she is helping refugees from Ukraine, the country she has called home for 19 years. As the war with Russia enters its third month, Peterson said refugees and those left behind in Ukraine are in dire need of donations.

According to Pierce County Sheriff Nancy Hove’s attorney, discrimination by the Pierce County Board of Supervisors is one reason she has chosen not to seek re-election in April 2023. Hove, who is 55, has been the sheriff for 15 years.

In a 3-3 vote, Mayor Dan Toland’s veto of a resolution designating $100,000 toward an outdoor skating rink as part of the city’s American Rescue Plan Act spending plan was upheld, meaning the resolution approved at the April 12 meeting was vetoed. At the April 12 meeting, the council approved 4-3 the ARPA spending plan with a friendly amendment to allocate $100,000 toward an outdoor ice rink project at Glen Park.

The Prescott City Council gave its unanimous approval to a resolution of support for the Coulee River Trails project and acquisition of the Pine Coulee portion of the trail by the Menomonie-based Landmark Conservancy.

Plans may change for a future north-south bypass of the City of Prescott. The Prescott Plan Commission last Monday asked for more information on options and prices for developing the corridor, which is included in the city’s comprehensive plan to be built in the future. Developers of the Great Rivers Subdivision raised concern that the location of the road could impact the number of homes they can build.

Capt. Richard Phillips told University of Wisconsin-River Falls graduates Saturday life will be a wild ride.

Dave “Goose” and Megan “Bacon” Gooselaw and their coffee trailer have become a familiar sight parked at 522 E. Main St. in Ellsworth’s east end. The Beldenville couple opened April 10 and business has been booming for the caffeine dealers.

The Pierce County Economic Development Corporation packed a double punch Friday, May 6 when it celebrated award winners from both 2020 and 2021 at its annual awards breakfast. The event was held at the Radisson Hotel in River Falls.

Maj. Gen. Jonathan Woodson, Army Reserve Medical Command commanding general and Command Sgt. Maj. Robert Boudnik, AR-MEDCOM command sergeant major, recognized EHS students and faculty, including social studies teacher Lt. Col. Ryan Casper, 7212th Medical Support Unit commander, for their support of Afghan refugees at Fort Mc-Coy last December.

This Memorial Day will mark the seventh annual Memorial March from Red Wing to Hastings, Minn., along the Great River Road.

Liz Dietsche has loved county fairs since she was a child. Before coming to Pierce County to take over the fair manager position, she was part of the Washington County Fair in one form or another for 32 years.

Bay City American Legion Post 357 is planning to build a veterans’ memorial on donated land adjacent to the Harding-Hall-Darrington building fronting the railroad tracks in Bay City.

Ron Campbell, longtime Pierce County Food Pantry director and board member, will be remembered with a memorial garden, which was dedicated on Wednesday, May 18.

American Legions in Pierce County will host a multitude of Memorial Day observances on Monday, May 30. Memorial Day is a day for remembrance for those who have died in service to our country.

Kimberly Braun, the owner of Lucille’s in downtown Prescott, will host her second annual Drag Queen Brunch on Sunday, May 29. The idea of a Drag Brunch show took shape in 2020.

School District of River Falls Community Education and Communications Director Jennifer Ames has been busy since she joined the district almost one year ago. Her presentation to the River Falls School Board Monday, May 16 proved that.
