Exhibit wolves euthanized MADISON — Two timber wolves that were part of the popular environmental education exhibits at the state’s MacKenzie Environmental Center in Poynette were euthanized because a rabid skunk was found in their cage.
Under state law, any captive wild animal that comes in contact with a rabies-positive animal must be euthanized or quarantined.
Center director Derek Duane said quarantining wolves is not possible because the incubation period is unknown and could exceed a year, making care of the animals impractical.
The dead skunk was found Sept. 20 in the caged area housing the wolves. Tests by the State Laboratory of Hygiene confirmed it had rabies.
The wolves were euthanized Wednesday.
