TOWN OF KINNICKINNIC - A road rage incident Aug. 12 in the town of Kinnickinnic resulted in the death of one man and a first-degree reckless homicide charge for the other.

Scott Jason Krelberg, 43, Baldwin, posted $10,000 cash bond Aug. 17 on the charge in St. Croix County Circuit Court. If convicted, he faces a maximum penalty of 60 years in prison.

The man who died was Jeremy David Anderson, 48, of Baldwin. His wife said he was on his way to work in Oakdale, Minn. at the time of the crash.

According to the complaint:

Wisconsin State Patrol and St. Croix County deputies were dispatched to a two-vehicle crash at 7:12 a.m. Aug. 12 at Mile Marker 13 westbound on I-94. Police found a black Chevy Colorado on its side in a group of trees in the north ditch. Anderson, pronounced dead at the scene, was found in the driver’s seat wearing his seat belt. He had severe head and body trauma. Crash marks indicated that after he left the road, his truck traveled through the ditch, up an embankment and struck multiple trees before it rolled onto the passenger’s side. The front driver’s door was sheared off.

Krelberg called police and reported he had been involved in a hit and run crash. Police responded to Circle K at 660 Brekke Drive in the town of Hudson where Krelberg told officers he had been driving westbound on I-94 between exits 16 and 10 when another vehicle had been brake checking him and causing him to take evasive maneuvers. He claimed he was trying to pass Anderson when Anderson sped up and was driving alongside him. Krelberg stated he was in the left lane when Anderson’s Chevy Colorado veered into his lane, causing him to lose control and veer right. Krelberg said he stopped after a short time, got out of his vehicle, and checked for damage. He said he looked back to see if the other vehicle was still around, but it was nowhere in sight. Krelberg said he continued westbound until exit 4 where he went to the Circle K to await police.

Krelberg’s dashcam video revealed a different story, as did dashcam footage from a semi traveling behind the trucks. The semi’s dashcam shows the Colorado in the right lane and the Silverado in the left lane. Krelberg can be seen quickly turning right, merging into the right lane and striking the Colorado, sending it into the ditch. Krelberg later admitted that he steered toward Anderson’s truck and “may have overreacted.”

Police transported Krelberg to Hudson Hospital for a blood draw after he admitted to smoking marijuana the night before to sleep. He was then transported to St. Croix County Jail without incident.

Krelberg’s next court appearance is a pre-trial scheduling conference at 9;30 a.m. Sept. 17 at St. Croix County Government Center.

O’Connell Family Funeral Home in Baldwin is handling Anderson’s arrangements.
