And we’ll take professional scientists, too!
PRESCOTT – Coulee River Trails needs volunteers to help identify plants in Magee Park to assess the impact of trails. Volunteers can expect to spend two to three hours sampling points in the grid with their group. Participation from any age is welcomed. However, students younger than ninth grade must be accompanied by an adult, and all volunteers must sign a liability release form.
Several dates have been selected to accommodate different schedules:
• 5-8 p.m. Wednesday, June 22
• 5-8 p.m. Friday, June 24
• 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, June 25
• 1-4 p.m. Sunday, June 26
• 5-8 p.m. Wednesday, June 29 Sampling will be conducted on the proposed trail corridors leading through Magee Park (CRT Zone 3) and at random points to get a complete picture of what is growing throughout the park. Each group will conduct a survey around preselected GPS points that will be marked within the park. Volunteers should wear long sleeves and long pants to prevent contact with hazardous plants (like poison ivy).
Don’t have experience identifying plants and woody species? The committee plans on using free mobile apps (PlantNet and Seek) to help; just point your phone at it and take a picture, and it will tell you what you are looking at. There will also be leaders to help if needed.
