A River Falls woman fled with her child into the snow barefoot after being assaulted by her partner.
Jordan Timothy Swenson, 22, Cottage Grove, Minn., was ordered to pay $10,000 cash bail Feb. 18 in Pierce County Circuit Court on felony strangulation and suffocation (domestic abuse), misdemeanor bail jumping (domestic abuse), battery (domestic abuse), neglecting a child (specified harm did not occur), disorderly conduct (domestic abuse), contact after domestic abuse arrest and misdemeanor bail jumping charges, all with the repeater modifier added. If convicted, he faces a maximum penalty of six years in prison and/or fines up to $10,000.
According to the complaint:
Police responded to a domestic call at 10:03 p.m. Feb. 15 on West Johnson Street in River Falls. Dispatch said a pregnant woman had called police after being thrown to the ground by her partner, who was intoxicated and angry. The woman and a 3-year-old child had fled the apartment without shoes, in flimsy clothes, during a bitterly cold night. She told officers when they arrived that Swenson had run down the block, but came back and charged her, locking her and their child out of the apartment. It was about 20 degrees out with snow on the ground.
Officers put the woman and her child in a patrol car to warm up. She had redness on her neck and blood droplets on her shirt. She was also hyperventilating and struggling to breathe. She told officers she was nine weeks pregnant.
According to the woman, Swenson went outside for a time to smoke marijuana but came back inside an hour later intoxicated. He was not supposed to be drinking due to a domestic abuse arret on Jan. 21. When she told him to leave, he grabbed her by the neck and slammed her over a couch, hit her and screamed at her. She was able to record some of the incident. Swenson can be heard slamming his head into a heater in the recording while the woman was on the phone with dispatch, claiming she was hitting him.
When he came at her again, she grabbed the child and ran out of the house with Swenson chasing her. He ran down the block, but came back and charged her, so she hid on the other side of the building until police arrived. Police arrested Swenson in the apartment’s kitchen at Taser point. He told officers they had argued over parenting practices and denied hurting the woman.
The next day, Swenson violated the no contact order by placing calls to the woman from jail. She told police he was trying to get her to drop the charges, promising nothing like that would ever happen again. The jail blocked him from calling her again.
Swenson was charged with domestic disorderly conduct in Pierce County Circuit Court in January; he was released on bond with conditions of no abusive contact and no consuming alcohol. Minnesota court records indicated Swenson was convicted of felony second degree assault with a dangerous weapon on May 7, 2021.
His next court appearance was a preliminary hearing scheduled for 11:30 a.m. Feb. 25.
