The Finance and Personnel Committee of the Pierce County Board of Supervisors on Nov. 4 approved a boundary change that would shift two River Falls parcels from supervisorial District 8 to District 7.
The committee forwarded the proposed boundary change resolution to the full board for consideration.
The two parcels, totaling nearly 23 acres on the south side of River Falls near State Highways 35 and 29, were annexed into the City of River Falls from the Town of River Falls on April 9. The city filed a request with the county that the annexed property be part of City Ward 14.
Ward 14 lies within District 7. Under state law, a city may add annexed property to an existing contiguous ward only if it is within the same county supervisory, state Assembly or congressional district as the ward. Because the parcels in question are currently in District 8, the Board of Supervisors would have to approve a boundary adjustment to move them to District 7, since a single ward cannot be located in two or more supervisory districts, according to a memo to the committee from the county clerk and corporation counsel.
If approved by the full board, the boundary change would shift the parcels from District 8, represented by Supervisor Dean Bergseng, to District 7, represented by Supervisor Scott Bjork.
Two people live on the annexed land, which the city has zoned for medium-density residential.
