The Ellsworth Cooperative Creamery experienced an ammonia leak at its Ellsworth production facility shortly after noon on Monday, Aug. 19.
CEO/Manager Paul Bauer released a statement shortly thereafter, assuring customers and the community that the situation was under control with no ongoing risk.
“As soon as the leak was detected, we promptly activated our safety protocols, which included the swift and safe evacuation of both our retail store and production plant,” Bauer said. “We are pleased to report that this was done without any incident.”
Bauer said any ammonia that leaked is in the process of evaporating and does not pose a threat to the community.
“We are closely monitoring the situation to ensure continued safety,” Bauer said. “We extend our sincere thanks to the Ellsworth first responders for their rapid and effective response. We are grateful for their support and professionalism.”
The Ellsworth retail store, located at 232 N. Wallace St., remained closed Monday and planned to reopen for normal business hours Tuesday, Aug. 20.
