A Minnesota man fleeing from police was apparently trying to get to Hy-Vee in time to buy pizza.
Meridyan Sky Robertson, 21, Rochester, Minn., was ordered to pay $500 cash bond May 29 on felony vehicle operator flee/elude officer and felony second-degree recklessly endangering safety charges in Pierce County Circuit Court. If convicted, the maximum penalty Robertson faces is 10 years in prison and/or fines up to $25,000.
According to the complaint:
At 10:35 p.m. May 28, a Pierce County deputy on patrol noticed a vehicle speeding southbound on Highway 35 in the town of Diamond Bluff north of County Road O. The officer clocked the vehicle, which had Minnesota plates, at 108 mph. The officer immediately activated his emergency lights and siren and attempted a traffic stop, but the driver shut off his headlights and taillights and kept going. The officer’s speed reached 125 mph while he tried to catch up with the suspect vehicle, which turned southbound on County Road VV with his lights still extinguished.
The vehicle turned into a driveway at N1545 County Road VV and stopped, approximately 3.3 miles after the officer initiated the traffic stop. The officer ordered the driver to put his hands out of his window at gunpoint. After identifying himself, the driver refused to speak to police. The driver’s younger brother, who was a passenger, told police they had come over to Wisconsin to go to the top of a hill; they were allegedly heading back to Minnesota, trying to make it to Hy-Vee to get pizza. Police gave him and their dog a ride to Kwik-Trip in Red Wing, where his father arranged for an Uber driver to pick them up. Police transported Robertson to Pierce County Jail without incident.
Robertson’s next court appearance is a preliminary hearing at 11 a.m. July 22.
