Ellsworth man arrested for sex offender registry violation

A man living in Ellsworth was arrested after failing to update his address on the sex offender registry.

David Wayne Tanner, 37, was ordered to pay $500 cash bail on felony sex registry violation, felony bail jumping and possess drug paraphernalia charges Oct. 24 in Pierce County Circuit Court. If convicted, the maximum penalty is six years in prison and/or fines up to $10,000.

According to the complaint:

At 2:04 a.m. Oct. 24, a River Falls police officer pulled over a 2007 Buick Rendezvous heading north on Highway 65 at Division Street going 70 mph in a 55-mph-zone. The vehicle had no license plate and an expired temporary license plate in the rear window. Two men were in the vehicle, including Tanner, the driver.

Tanner provided the officer with an ID card and said he didn’t have his license with him. He said the vehicle belonged to his grandmother, who was actually his passenger’s mother. Tanner said the passenger and his mother, who live at 141 Evergreen Estates in Ellsworth, took him in. His ID card listed a Clayton, Wis. address, but he said he’d been living in Ellsworth for a week.

Tanner, who is a registered sex offender, failed to update his license with his correct address. Officers also saw drug paraphernalia in plain view in the vehicle, so they had both men exit the Buick. Tanner had five open felony cases out of Polk County; in two of them, he had been charged with sex offender registry violations with a repeater enhancer. The bond for each case stated he was supposed to live with his mother in Clayton. He had also provided law enforcement with a second Evergreen Estates address (106) at which he allegedly resides.

In the vehicle police found a glass pipe, two cut straws, and a green bottle cap, all of which tested positive for methamphetamine. Tanner became agitated when police told him he was under arrest. At the jail in his wallet, officers found several debit cards belonging to other people.

Tanner is scheduled to appear at a Pierce County preliminary hearing at 2 p.m. Nov. 7.
