Emergency declared after rains cause flooding

Pierce County declared a local emergency after heavy flooding with rain that fell June 28 – July 1.

The flooding washed out some rural roads and caused damage for townships and homeowners, as well as Pierce County.

The county is putting together information from homeowners about damage.

“We are now seeking information to determine the extent of damages to homes and businesses in the county,” a statement from Pierce County reads. “the information gathered will be used to support grant and/or loan requests for the county to assist in recovery and reducing future flood risks. Assistance to individuals and families meeting income criteria may also be available.

Low to moderate income households with damage affecting their dwelling livability should call Pierce County Emergency Management at 715-273-6751 for information.

County Board Chair Jeff Holst and Administrative Coordinator Jason Mathis signed a proclamation on June 30 “Declaring a the Existence of a County Emergency Due to Torrential Rain.

The Pierce County Board at its next meeting will review a resolution declaring a state of emergency as well.

The county will be eligible for state disaster funds in the amount of $157,512.96.

The measure was reviewed by the Finance & Personnel Committee last Monday and forwarded on for full county board review at its meeting July 28.
