EPC track and field crowns six individual conference champions

The 2023 iteration of the Dunn-St. Croix Conference track and field championship was one to remember for Elmwood/Plum City.

The Wolves crowned six individual conference champions in Durand on Tuesday, May 16. Elmwood/Plum City also had three Second-Team All-Conference performances and four Honorable Mention efforts.

Elmwood/Plum City’s conference champions are headlined by seniors Trevor Asher and Izzy Forster, who each claimed a pair of individual titles in the long jump and triple jump events. Forster also helped the girls’ 4x200 and 4x400-meter relays win a pair of titles.

Given the top-end success led by Asher and Forster, along with seven other all-conference distinctions, Elmwood/Plum City was also competitive as a team. The boys finished fourth with 68.5 points behind Mondovi, Glenwood City and Elk Mound, which won the title with 184 points.

The girls scored 85 points as a team and secured another fourth-place finish. Elmwood/Plum City trailed only Durand, Elk Mound and Monodovi, which won the conference championship with 145 points.

For Elmwood/Plum City head coach Amanda Webb, the 2023 Dunn-St. Croix Conference track and field meet in Durand was about setting kids up for success and maximizing team points.

“We put kids in a position to have success where they could finish in the top three of their event,” Webb said. “Every member of our team did what the coaches asked and did their best. All of them stepped up and I was really happy with the team’s performance last week.”

It would be tough to find an athlete on any team in the Dunn-St. Croix Conference who had a better meet than the aforementioned Forster. Between her success in the field events and the relays, Forster won four conference titles in Durand on Tuesday.

Forster earned her first individual championship when she long jumped 16 feet, 8.5 inches, which was over a foot more than the eventual second-place finisher. Shortly thereafter, she triple jumped 35 feet, 2.5 inches, nearly three feet ahead of the runner-up.

“Isabella did great and some of her preliminary jumps held, so she didn’t need to jump in the finals,” Webb said. “We got to save her legs for the other events and it was great for her all-around.”

Izzy Forster won the conference championship in the 4x200-meter relay alongside senior teammates Allyson Fleishauer, Lily Webb and Hannah Forster. She also won a title in the 4x400 with Fleishauer, Hannah Forster and sophomore Hailey Webb.

“We kind of knew where the 4x200 relay would be based on their history, so it was fun to watch them,” Amanda Webb said. “The 4x400 is kind of a new event we started working on this year. They enjoyed putting that together and it was a lot of fun to watch them have success.”

While Izzy Forster dominated the girls’ competition, the aforementioned Asher did the same for the boys. The senior standout won his first individual title of the day when he triple jumped 43 feet, 2.5 inches, which was nearly two feet clear of second place.

Asher earned his second conference championship when he long jumped 21 feet, 11.5 inches. It was one of Asher’s closest competitions of the season, as he bested Boyceville’s top jumper by less than half an inch in the finals.

“Trevor won by a quarter of an inch against Caden Wold, who is an excellent jumper for Boyceville,” Webb said. “When Trevor puts his uniform on, he gets dialed in and knows what he needs to do. He is pretty level-headed and can compete when the pressure is on.”

Other top results include Hannah Forster’s second-place finish in the girls’ 300-meter hurdles. The boys’ 4x200 squad of Asher, sophomore Tim Bechel, junior Riley Bechel and senior Tylor LaCroix finished second with a time of 1:37.78.

The girls’ 4x800 relay of freshmen Taylor Asher, Lillian Pullen, Willow Cripe and sophomore Olivia Pullen finished runner-up with a time of 11:40.37. Senior Beau Holt finished tied for third in the pole vault with a height of 9 feet, 6 inches.

The girls’ 4x100 relay group of Hailey Webb, Lily Webb, Fleishauer and junior TriChelle Smaller finished third after running a 54.90 in the finals. The Elmwood/Plum City boys also finished third in the 4x100 and 4x400-meter relays.

The 4x100 squad included Asher, Riley Bechel, Tim Bechel and LaCroix, while the 4x400 featured Tim Bechel, LaCroix, Holt and junior Aiden Maxwell.

“Some of those Elk Mound kids are really fast,” Amanda Webb said. “I just told our boys to shoot for second or third place and reach for realistic goals. They did a really nice job with that.”

Elmwood/Plum City will be back in action at the WIAA Division 3 Regional championship at Colfax on Monday, May 22. Events are slated to begin at 4 p.m.
