Freedom Park column: Our future of “Eagle Park!”

Posted

I first met Ava one year ago when she and her grandmother, Ms. Gloria Nelson, came into the Great River Road Visitor and Learning Center. Ava Brunckhorst, resident of Prescott, is 4 and loves Freedom Park so much that she has named it “Her Eagle Park!” Her grandmother says that she asks to visit “Eagle Park” every time she is with her. The two of them have been visiting the center pretty much every week for the past year. Her favorite thing to do in the center is to push the button on the eagle statue to hear the eagle call out. I have watched Ava spend her time walking around the center looking at all the animals on the walls. Ava has also colored her fair share of coloring pages at our children’s table.

Today, Ava’s grandmother (Gloria Nelson), her mother (April Brunckhorst), her adorable little sister Ariel (3), and Ava came to our center. I asked Ava what her favorite thing to do at “Eagle Park” was and she replied, “I love to play” (on our playground.) Her grandmother said, “She loves to run up and down the stairs in the Amphitheater too.” I asked Ava if she has seen many birds at the park and she replied, “Yes, I love birds.” I was also told that she really enjoys going through the many gardens that surround the center and smelling the flowers. Maybe a young master gardener in the making?

The connection that Ava feels for Freedom Park – Great River Road Visitor and Learning Center is heartwarming! Ava’s love for our center shows in her beautiful little face every time she pushes the eagle statue button. It’s the little things in life that bring joy and Ava has brought much joy to our center over the weeks. The children are our future for Freedom Park – Great River Road Visitor and Learning Center. When I look at Ava and Ariel, I see the future of our park and the center.

It makes me proud to run a center that a 4-year-old loves so much. Next time that you are visiting, hopefully you will get the chance to meet this amazing 4-year-old named Ava, and maybe she will even teach you how to push the eagle button.
