In addition to both River Falls and Ellsworth, other local basketball teams were in action throughout last week including the Prescott girls basketball team, Spring Valley, Prescott boys and Elmwood/Plum City boys basketball teams.

The Prescott Cardinals girls basketball team dropped to 1-2 for the season after a 41-36 defeat on the road against Altoona. The Cardinals struggled throughout the game with shooting from the floor. Prescott shot approximately 25% from the floor against Altoona.

The low shooting percentage, especially in the first half, contributed to a three-point halftime deficit for the Cardinals 17-14. Leading the charge offensively for Prescott was Katrina Budworth, who finished the game with 16 of the Prescott 36 points. She also had two rebounds, two assists and four steals in the five-point loss.

The Cardinals didn’t have a reliable second scoring option throughout the game. Nobody else was in double figures and the scoring was scattered throughout seven different Cardinals that all had four points or less. The scoring improved in the second half, but the continued struggles from the floor regarding shooting efficiency stalled any chance of a Prescott comeback.

Perhaps the biggest struggle shooting from the floor was the three-point shooting. Prescott shot 4-25 from three-point range against Altoona. In addition to that, Altoona won the rebounding battle 39-21 against Prescott, which was likely the deciding factor in the game.

With the loss, Prescott drops to 12 for the season, including an 0-1 record in the Middle Border Conference. The next game for Prescott is on Friday, Dec. 3, on the road against Osceola. It will be the second consecutive conference match for Prescott. That game is slated to begin at 7 p.m. Spring Valley defeats Alma/Pepin

The Spring Valley girls basketball team, under the direction of head coach Sean Hoolihan, notched its first win of the season on Tuesday, Nov. 23, at home against Alma/Pepin in a non-conference matchup.

For the Cardinals, it was an offensively balanced game. Spring Valley had three players in double figures for the game including Mara Ducklow, Charlie Vanasse and Halle Thomas. Both Ducklow and Vanasse had 17 points each, which Thomas contributed 10 in the 12-point Spring Valley victory.

The first half of action was highly competitive, neither team could put together a large scoring run to pull away from the other. Going into the locker room for halftime, Spring Valley held a 27-25 advantage over Pepin/Alma. However, the second half was completely different.

Spring Valley came out of the intermission and put together multiple scoring runs to break the game open. In addition to that, Spring Valley played quality defense which contributed to the 29-19 scoring advantage for the Cardinals in the second half. The dominant second half propelled Spring Valley to a 56-44 victory, its first win of the season.

In addition to the three aforementioned Spring Valley scorers, the Cardinals also received points from Maddy Shafer, who had six points, and Lydia Hannack, who had two points. The Cardinals improved to 11 for the season. The next game is on Thursday, Dec. 2, on the road against Durand in the first Dunn-St. Croix Conference matchup of the season. That game is scheduled to begin at 7:15 p.m.

Prescott boys score 84 in season- opening win On Tuesday, Nov. 23, the Prescott boys basketball team competed in and won its first game of the season, which was a road game against New Richmond. The Cardinals showed no rust, as they won by 12 points in the 84-72 victory on the road.

It was an old-fashioned shootout in New Richmond. Both teams were putting up points in bunches. For Prescott, the scoring was led by Jordan Malmlov, who posted an impressive 26 points, in addition to grabbing two rebounds, dishing for five assists, and grabbing two steals. His scoring ROUNDUP

was supplemented with two 16-point performances, one from Dallas Wallin and the other from Brandon Stuart.

Despite scoring 34 in the first half, Prescott defensively wasn’t quite as solid. The Cardinals allowed 40 points in the first half and went into the intermission in a six-point deficit. Partially because CJ Campbell of New Richmond was on fire in the first half. By the time the game was over, Campbell had 27 points for the Tigers.

However, Prescott got better both defensively and offensively in the second half, which was the winning recipe for head coach Nick Johnson’s squad. The Cardinals outscored New Richmond 50-32 in the second half en route to the 84-72 victory to begin the season 1-0.

The next game for Prescott is on Friday, Dec. 3, on the road against Baldwin-Woodville. That game is slated to begin at 7 p.m.

Elmwood/Plum City boys blowout Eleva-Strum 67-34

Like many other local teams, the Elmwood/Plum City boys basketball team notched its first win of the season on Tuesday, Nov. 23, on the road. The Wolves dominantly defeated Eleva-Strum to improve to 1-0 for the year.

In the first half of the first game of the season, the Wolves were playing like it was a playoff game. They were offensively crisp and were pestering defensively. The Wolves outscored Eleva-Strum 44-17 in the first half, an impressive margin that allowed reserves to see some varsity minutes in the second half.

The Wolves scoring was distributed fairly evenly throughout the roster. Luke Webb had 16, Christian Martin had 13, Jarrod Pelzel had 13, Dayne Whipple had eight and Trevor Asher had six. The rest of the scoring was scattered among other players in smaller amounts.

Defensively, the Wolves forced 21 turnovers by Eleva-Strum, which gave Elmwood/Plum City some easy transition opportunities that they took advantage of during the dominant victory.

Elmwood/Plum City outscored Eleva-Strum 23-17 in the second half which made the final score 67-34 in favor of the Wolves.

The Wolves have their first Dunn-St. Croix Conference matchup of the year on Tuesday, Dec. 7, at 7:15 p.m. at home against Elk Mound.
