A Hager City man was charged in Dakota County, Minn. Court for allegedly trying to cash a forged check at a South St. Paul bank on Oct. 23, 2024.
The felony charge against Calvin Joseph Meerkins carries a maximum sentence of up to five years in jail and fines between $3,000-$10,000.
According to the criminal complaint, police were called at 4:34 p.m. Oct. 23 after Meerkins allegedly tried to cash a “washed” check at a bank. Meerkins allegedly presented a check written out to him for $2,400 and his identification to a bank teller. The teller suspected that the check had been washed and called the account owner to verify authenticity. Meerkins then told the teller he was going outside to have a cigarette and got in his vehicle and left the bank.
The identification Meerkins had used and check were turned over to investigators.
Merkins is also facing charges in Pierce County Circuit Court related to trying to cash fraudulent checks.
