Hager man dies while helping woman in ditch

TOWN OF OAK GROVE – A Hager City man died Monday night while attempting to help remove a woman’s vehicle from the ditch.

Pierce County deputies responded to a crash involving four vehicles at 7:52 p.m. Feb. 6 on State Highway 35 near 1200th Street. Douglas Whaley, 49, Hager City, was using his 2019 Dodge Ram to assist in removing a 2010 Chrysler 300, operated by 24-year-old Brianna Cox of Prescott, from the ditch. A 2022 Freightliner box truck, operated by 44-yearold Alim Abdullah, Dallas, Texas, was heading north on Highway 35 and struck Whaley’s Dodge Ram. The Freightliner then struck at 2004 Pontiac Grand Am, operated by Maunee Rasmusson-Waltman, 24, Prescott. Officers said road conditions were icy.

Whaley’s Dodge also contained a 13-year-old female passenger. Jvonta Carter, 30, Dallas, Texas, was a passenger in the Freightliner. The Chrysler in the ditch also had a 3-week-old infant passenger.

Allina EMS transported Whaley to Regions Hospital in St. Paul, where he was pronounced dead. Ellsworth EMS transported the 13-year-old to Regions Hospital with undisclosed injuries. Ellsworth EMS also transported the 3-week-old infant to Regina Hospital in Hastings, Minn. with undisclosed injuries. Cox, Rasmusson-Waltman, Abdullan and Carter were not transported by EMS.

Prescott Police, Prescott Fire, Allina EMS and Ellsworth EMS assisted PCSO at the scene.
