'Fair Courts End Gerrymandering' Rally in River Falls

RIVER FALLS – On Friday, Jan. 21 at noon, a Fair Courts End Gerrymandering Rally will be held in Veterans Park on Main Street in River Falls. The goal is to let the Courts know that Wisconsinites are watching and we expect them to act in a nonpartisan manner -in the best interest of the people, not politicians -when drawing new voting district maps.

Rally speakers include Don Leake, Professor Emeritus UW-River Falls. Dr. Leake is one of 36 Wisconsinites, “Concerned Voters of Wisconsin,” who on Jan. 4 filed a friend of the court brief with the Wisconsin Supreme Court.

Dr. Leake, led the WIMAP Wisconsin Map Assessment Project, a group of Wisconsin map enthusiasts who drew and submitted their own maps earlier in the redistricting process and then evaluated these maps along with those submitted by the Peoples Map Commission, the Wisconsin Legislature, and the general public. WIMAP also analyzed the merits of the redistricting maps submitted to the Wisconsin Supreme Court in the pending redistricting case.

Invited but not confirmed speakers include Rep. Shannon Zimmerman, Sen. Rob Stafsholt, former Sen. Patty Schachtner, and former candidate for Assembly, Sarah Yacoub.

Bob Maline, volunteer with Western Wisconsin for Nonpartisan Voting Districts will serve as Master of Ceremonies. Other rally sponsors include the River Falls Wisconsin Branch of the American Association of University Women, Pierce County GrassRoots Organizing and the League of Women Voters St. Croix Valley.

This local rally is one of more than a dozen taking place simultaneously across the state, organized by the Wisconsin Fair Maps Coalition.
