ELMWOOD – Pierce County’s most out-of-this-world festival is celebrating 45 years this weekend,complete with UFO tours, new speakers, free activities and more, all paying homage to Elmwood’s history of UFO sightings.
Festivities kick off for the kiddos Wednesday, July 24 with a chance to make an alien mask at theElmwood Public Library (111 N. Main St.) Children can pick up a kit and wear the mask to the grand parade on Sunday.
All weekend, people are invited to Elmwood’s new History Center (Pierce County Historical Association)on Main Street to view the exhibit,“In the News: Elmwood’s UFOs.”PCHA volunteers have compilednewspaper clippings and TV coverage of Elmwood’s UFO sightings in the 1970s, publicity in the 1980s and the“landing pad”proposal.
On Thursday, July 25, the community is invited to kick off the celebration with the Citizens BankCommunity Dinner, under the big tent from 4:30-7 p.m. A good meal will sound good after a long day ofchecking out the community’s garage sales from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Directories will be available at 5 p.m. Wednesday at Citizens State Bank, Elmwood Public Library and the Coop.
New events this year include a host of speakers on Saturday, July 27, including:
-- UFO bus sighting tours at 11 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 2 p.m.and 3:30 p.m. leaving from the alley byAmerican Legion Park.While this is event is not new, it's gained popularity the last few years.
-- Aaron Gulyas,“The Saucer of Life,”at the Elmwood Auditorium at 10 a.m. Gulyas is a teacher,historian and writer who teaches courses in United States and world history at Mott Community College. He has authored a number of books on television, science fiction and fringe political cultures and hosts "The Saucer of Life” podcast, which delves into the history and lore of theflying saucer culture.
-- Tabby Voss will host“Spirit Talk: Hauntings and Spirit Allies”at the Elmwood Auditorium atnoon. Voss is the owner and CEO of The Broom & Crow, LLC. She calls herself a witch, feminist, writer, crafter and creator.
-- Sara Comeau will host“Mend and Ascend”in the Elmwood Auditorium at 1 p.m. Comeaudescribes herself as a “Cosmic Ambassador to Ascension,” a “Sirian Starseed”who helps awakenand bring awareness to others about self-worth, open communication, extraterrestrials and theirpurpose, raising your frequency and more.
-- At 2:30 p.m., paranormal speaker Michael Harriswill host a talk in the Elmwood Auditorium.Harris is a writer/editor with Paranormal Publications Inc.
-- At 4:30 p.m., visitors can learn about the Infinite Rabbit Hole podcast in the ElmwoodAuditorium. The podcast “explores the depths of the worlds that parallel our own.”
-- At 8 p.m., gather at the football field with Cosmic Ambassador Sara Comeau for star gazing and ET contact.
Another new activity this year is the inaugural UFO House Decorating Contest, put on by the Elmwood Area Community Club. First place will win $100, second garners a cool $75 and third gets $50. Homes within the Elmwood School District can participate.
The weekend will be rounded out with several traditional favorites, such as the UFO Days Grand Parade on Sunday, led by grand marshals Dave & Amy Bechel, an ecumenical church service Sunday morning, live music at area bars and on Main Street, UFO burgers under the big tent, kid activities, souvenir standmerch and much more.For the full list of UFO events, visit “UFO Days–Elmwood WI–Last full weekend every July” on Facebook.
