Journal brings home multiple WNA awards

MADISON – The Pierce County Journal was the recipient of 11 awards at the 2021 Wisconsin Newspaper Association Foundation Better Newspaper Contest awards banquet Friday, June 24 at The Madison Concourse Hotel & Governor’s Club in downtown Madison.

The contest received 2,117 entries from 98 newspapers. Eligible entries were published between Sept. 1, 2020 and Aug. 31, 2021. Members of the West Virginia Press Association served as judges. The Journal’s accolades (in Division E) include:

• Best Artistic Photo, first place, John McLoone (photo of Flood Run participants in Diamond Bluff)

• Best Use of Local Photography, second place, John McLoone

• Best Large Ad, second place, Bruce Karnick

• Reporting on Local Government, second place, Sarah Nigbor

• Reporting on Local Education, third place, Sarah Nigbor

• Coronavirus Coverage, third place, Sarah Nigbor

• Best Niche Product, third place, John McLoone, Jack McLoone, Sarah Nigbor • Feature Story (Profile), honorable mention, Sarah Nigbor (for story on Pierce County Public Health Officer AZ Snyder)

• Best Niche Product (Pierce County Fair tab), honorable mention, Nancy Price, Sarah Nigbor, Jack McLoone

• Best Large Ad, honorable mention, Nancy Price

• Best Grocery Ad, honorable mention, Nancy Price, John McLoone Best in Division winners were:

• Division E (non-daily circulation of 2,249 or less): Grant County Herald Independent, Lancaster

• Division D (non-daily circulation of 2,250-4,499): The Monroe Times

• Division C (non-daily circulation of at least 4,500): Peninsula Pulse, Baileys Harbor

• Division B (daily circulation of less than 9,999): EagleHerald, Marinette

• Division A (daily circulation of at least 10,000): The Gazette, Janesville Several college newspapers were also honored during the vent. The 2021 WNAF Collegiate Better Newspaper Contest received 262 submissions across 20 categories from 11 campus newspapers.

Locally, UW-River Falls collected a few awards in Division B:
