Letter to the editor: Fair maps guard against extreme agendas

To the editor,

Wisconsin residents do not want an extreme political agenda from either party, but our rigged maps force us to accept it.

Wisconsin voters favor: Accepting federal funds to expand Badger-Care: 62% Increasing minimum wage: 55% Increasing funding for public schools: 55% Better funding for K-12 special education: 73% Protecting our drinking water by holding polluters accountable: 95% These numbers are from the Marquette Law School Poll and Badger State Research Poll of Likely Voters, 2019 and 2020.

Because of gerrymandering, our representatives can laugh at these numbers. They listen to their corporate donors, not us, so they don’t enact legislation to carry out what their constituents want.

Fair maps can change this. Fair maps guard against extreme agendas from either party because representatives have to work to please their constituents, not moneyed bosses.

You can weigh in on drawing a fair map yourself.

The People’s Map Commission, a volunteer organization creating nonpartisan maps in an open and transparent way, is accepting comments and maps at https ://govstatus .egov.com/peoplesmaps.

Draw Your Districts WI is a portal created by state legislators to receive public input: https://drawyourdistrict.legis.wisconsin.gov/ If you’d like help in submitting comments and maps online, attend a Mappy Hours event in Western Wisconsin to answer questions and help submit as much public input as possible. For dates, times and locations, stay tuned on Facebook and Instagram.
