To the editor,
The following was sent to Congressman Van Orden on Sept. 9, 2024 via the constituent portal on his website:
Congressman Van Orden:
Last week I received what can only be described as campaign mailers, advocating for you, but cloaked in language and intent as "Official Business" for you as a Congressman. The mailers are exactly the same in form, style, and substance as other candidate's campaign materials, and can only be understood as an appeal for votes.
On the mailing portion, under the return address, it reads:
"U.S. House of Representatives
Washington, D.C. 20515
Public Servant * Official Business
Paid for by official funds authorized by the House of Representatives"
The prohibition against the use of taxpayer funds for campaign purposes is quite clear, and your violation of that legal and ethical prohibition is highly disturbing and pushing if not crossing the boundaries of official corruption. The House Committee on Ethics cites specifics, as outlined below:
https://ethics.house.gov/campaign/general-prohibition-against-using-official-resources-campaign-or-political-purposes
How do you rationalize this camouflage and misuse of taxpayer (my) funds?
A concerned resident of Wisconsin's Third Congressional District,
Brian H. Crist
