To the editor,
As a living casualty of the American pandemic of poverty, I was compelled to march with the mass of poor and low wage workers in the WI Poor People’s Campaign's statewide March and Assembly at the state house in Madison on March 2. This manufactured American phenomenon of sustained poverty, in the richest country on the planet, affects 140 million people, like me. It is responsible for the death of 800 people daily. (https://www.poorpeoplescampaign.org/resource/2023-national-fact-
sheet/#:~:text=These%20tens%20of%20millions%20of,over%20800%20deaths%20a%20day.)
I responded to the call to join a mass fusion movement to fight this immoral policy of murder. With others I am engaging to create a society where I can have access to choices, like advancing to homeownership instead of being perpetually locked into a poor neighborhood. The resources exist for everybody to live well and thrive. We need to build the political power to make this happen!
I believe this is the path to abolishing the poverty pandemic, and every American must be brave enough to take it with me.
How much taller we will sit in our saddle when we overcome the challenge of erasing poverty as the fourth leading cause of death in America! Poverty touches every American life!
We can do better than resign the “least of us” to a holocaust of poverty!
We can make THE difference!
