To the editor,
Pierce County ranks fifth for highest property tax in Wisconsin. Why? On Feb, 27 the Pierce County Board of Supervisors will vote on a resolution to spend $31 million, costing another $20 million in
interest to build a four-courtroom structure out at the new jail. Why four courtrooms when we only had four jury trials in 2023?
This $51 million will come from an increase to our property taxes for the next 20 years. The old jail in the annex of the courthouse has available space. Why not use what we’ve already spent money on rather than letting it sit empty and then oppress the county with another tax burden? There are more cost-effective options to meet our needs, but the county board is not considering them unless you speak up. Contact your county board supervisor and tell them to vote no. If you don’t know who your supervisor is, contact the Pierce County Clerk and ask. You can make a difference.
