Letter to the editor: Referenda threatens checks and balances

Posted

To the editor,

ABSOLUTELY VOTE NO on the two referenda on the Aug. 13 ballot. Voting yes would change a part of section 35, Article IV of Wisconsin’s Constitution. It threatens checks and balances. It would give exclusive power to themselves, the legislature to accept, eliminate or slow funding for emergencies in the state or federal dollars. It is confusingly written by the legislative majority and put into the “Low Voter”

election in August and on the bottom of the ballot.

Examples: During the pandemic this same legislative majority, the current majority party did not work for eight months to address the emergency. They did object to the public health department, vaccines and the virility of the COVID-19 virus during that time.

The same majority objected to the governor having power to distribute the American Rescue Plan monies from the Federal government to address the problems from the pandemic.

Economic Development

  • $1.1 billion, or 55.8% of the total amount received, was allocated to economic development initiatives, including grants to support local businesses and workforce innovation grants to support pandemic recovery plans like the Main Street Bounce-Back grants and the Workforce Innovation grants.
  • The Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS) was given access to more than $400 million in ARPA funds to improve Wisconsin health care initiatives, including mental health and substance use disorders, as well as home and community-based services.

Plus, restaurants kept open, monthly child tax credits and K-12 school funding. At this moment the majority has held back PFAS funds for one year for all the communities with wells shut down. They want immunity for the polluters who knew that their products were hazardous. If they have immunity we, the people of Wisconsin have to pick up the entire clean up tab.

Get a ballot and just vote no!!
