To the editor,

Some people sure know how to spoil a good thing. The River Falls City leaf composting and brush collection site on the city’s west side has been serving the needs of city residents very well for the past few years, al- lowing almost unrestricted access to dump ou materials and pick up mulch and compost.

Now, apparently because of careless use and especially the deliberate discarding of prohibited materials, access is going to be limited to 3-7 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, and 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday. The facility is often heavily used and I’m thinking that the limited hours are going to cause a lot of inconvenience and a real bottleneck, especially in the fall when many residents are bringing down leaves for the composting pile.

The article announcing the change also stated that the facility was being used more heavily than anticipated. Well, obviously there must be a need for it. We have a city with many, many trees, shrubs, etc. and most residents take pride in keeping their homes and property looking neat so it shouldn’t be surprising that much leaf, tree, and brush material gets delivered.

The city is complaining about hardwood tree and large branch materials being left there. Is there a list of which kinds of wood are allowed and which are prohibited? Nothing to that effect is posted at the entrance to the site. Are not the commercial firms like Sava Tree taking their cuttings and trimmings down there?

It probably won’t be long before some of the city fathers decide that the city cannot afford to be providing this kind of service and everyone should be on their own to find commercial disposal services. This is a much-needed and very useful facility. Let’s keep it reasonably accessible and useful to our residents. The jerks that can’t read the signs and follow proper placement directions or drop off metal/ appliance or other nonorganic materials are contributing heavily to the problem.
